I wanted Battle Chess ever since it came to GOG. It was one of the first Computer games I ever played, and is the only one of those games I have a vivid memory of playing, and was dying to pick it up due to Nostalgia factor. I actually still have the diskette for it, but A: drives and DOS became obsolete about 10 years ago so I haven't been able to enjoy it in a long time.
So, thanks to the sale, I finally picked it up. Let me say, the animations are just as fun now as they were back then, and I never played Chinese Chess or Battle Chess 4000 before, so those were welcome additions to the purchase of just under 5 dollars.
I do want to say, however, that these games have NOT aged well. Granted they are all from 1989-1992 so you can't really expect them to be par. But let me just say that unless you think you can stomach something that has "early 90's PC" written ALL over it, you most likely will NOT enjoy Battle Chess Special Edition.
I have no comment on Combat Chess or Chessmaster, as I never played them.
