Like I said above, banishment from the forums does not eliminate your ability to get tech support at all. You can still read the forums and you can still use GOG's official support channels. Not to mention banishment from GOG is not banishment from the internet; there are plenty of forums and websites other than GOG's that can help with pretty much all the games GOG sells. Considering that only one person in the history of GOG has ever been banished completely from GOG, you'd have to be a pretty spectacular asshole to really worry about this happening.

But he said you can't get banned if you bought a game now so that little snippet is rendered moot.

I'm pretty sure he meant you can't get auto-banned via downrepping; there's really nothing stopping the GOG staff/admins from banning anyone.

I DL all my games as soon as I purchase them. They go directly into my 'GOG Game Backups' folder (with subfolders for each game for the extras, and further subfolders for any mods I get for any particular game).

I then copy that onto my other PC's backup drive. So I have 2 data drives on computers I use regularly with my GOG games and extras. I also have an external drive with them backed up there as well.

If GOG goes down and you don't have your games backed up, you've no one to blame but yourself. GOG has no responsibility to compensate anyone in a scenario like this.

If taken good care of and stored in appropriate cases and under appropriate temperatures, CDs/DVDs last 10+ years and much, much longer most likely.

Example: My family has music CDs that are 15+ years old which work just fine. I myself have my entire collection of PS1 games which most are 10+ years old and each and every one of them work just fine.

To be perfectly honest, if gog closes it's doors tomorrow and you lose access to all the games you bought, thats the end user's fault, not gog's or anybody elses. Gog is selling you games that you can back-up as many times as you wish, on however many different media that you want, if you choose not to, thats your problem, not gog's.

CD-Rs, unlike commercial CDs, use ink that degrades over time. Even when stored properly, you will be very lucky to get 10 years out of a CD-R.

Thats interesting, i might go take out some CD-Rs i have stored in the closet which i burned like almost 8 years ago to see if it still works :P

Yes, if they are at all important to you, now might be the time to reburn those.

Hello? CDs? In what century are you living? I have copies and several harddrives in our two computers. Constant exchange of harddiscs every few years also copies all this stuff to "fresh" media.

Other than that: I have several hundred CDs that are over 20 years old and so far, I only needed to restore only 2 of them (I found an internet service that polishes optical media: reredisk).

More importantly, why isn't my body manufacturing new blank cells for replacement purposes? If this keeps happening, I'll die of old age! Maybe I should go "downtown" and "backup" my genetic data.

I've only had one CD fail me, and that was my Master of Orion II disc. (A hole developed in it.) Thankfully, GOG has that game.

Not letting GoG go anywhere. No sir. Even if I have to chain it's servers to my ankles.
