blotunga: I have a 100mbps up/down line at home and I usually get around 2-6MB/s on gog, so that's 16-48mbps. I have rarely seen something downloading much faster, but that could be limited by the wireless router also... And upgrading to a gigabit line would cost about $6-7/month extra if I would ever need it :)
Wireless really does cut download speed. I tried testing download speeds and actually downloading stuff over a wireless connection and it was maybe 1/3 of what I get through wired and that was with Wireless N over 2.4 and 5 GHz

JMich: The extras only use 1 connection, since as I recall the windows downloader doesn't support resuming for extras. As for servers being slow at times, a pause and resume should usually fix it, since it should recheck servers and pick another one.
Do you also get slow downloads when you are not using the downloader, or is only the downloader slow?
Yes, with the downloader set to a single connection, speeds are the same with the downloader and without... with multiple connections the speed would be multiplied... but now that you mention it, I think it's always been the extras that have had the worst speeds. And that was when my setting number of connections didn't seem to make a difference. So what you say makes a lot of sense!

Though it seems like that should really be documented somewhere.

I get about 6-7mb a second on GOG and Steam. Amazon is a little slower for whatever reason.
