I've been an Amazon supporter for a while now, but I've noticed a trend I'm not happy with. They have started pulling pre-order movies off their site and replacing them with the ability to digitally buy the move from Prime as the only option. This may not be a global thing, but I've seen it with the movies I'm interested in. This keeps me from pre-ordering or even padding my wishlist. So, my question is, where do you buy movies from? As the title suggests, I'm only interested in legal, retail DVD's and/or Blu-ray media.

I didn't notice they were doing that. Shit, that's where I usually go.
Well I'm currently holding off buying movies right now because DVDs are being fazed out and I don't want to switch to BlueRay yet so I guess I have some time to think about this. One this is for sure, I'm not digitally downloading anything! I refuse to watch Blade Runner on a fucking laptop!

I just see who has the best price between Walmart and Amazon. I'd check other places like Best Buy, Target, and Overstock but they rarely have better prices than Amazon or Walmart.

News to me. What movies are you talking about? Amazon.co.uk still has every movie I want on retail DVD.

I buy all my CDs (yes, I still buy those), DVDs and BluRays from a local shop. I've been a loyal customer there for years. The guy who owns it is fantastic. He seems to know everything about music and movies, and if there's something he doesn't know, he'll find out for you. If there's something he doesn't have, he'll order it for you, at no extra charge. The only music and movies I buy on Amazon are things that simply aren't released here, primarily DVDs. I buy books on Amazon though.

The lego movie has had multiple pre-order versions removed (The page has gone from "Preorder" to "Unavailable" or "sign up to receive updates". You can, however, add at least one version to your wishlist.

Big Bang Theory season 7 has always had "sign up..." instead of preoder. In the past, they have had preorder options with a date guestimate on when its release.

For both of those, there are Amazon Prime adds for the respective content at the top of the page.

A third movie didn't come up the first time I searched for it. Its there now, but the first search ONLY yielded the Amazon Prime preorder option.

Its definitely not a global thing, but I'm wondering if it soon will be (or with choice titles). Either way, I'd still like to make sure I'm not missing a good site. As one poster mentioned, I haven't seen a good deal in Best Buy in a very long time. Target will occasionally have them but when not on sale, they are pretty steep in the price department and their selection is pretty small.

Fry's Electronics or Meijer or wherever is convenient. I bought DVDs one time off of eBay and they ended up being bootleg (or at least I'm 99% certain they are) and I just bought my first movie from amazon this past week, so we'll see if I continue with that. Yeah, same here on both accounts. I normally buy Japanese music or less conveniently available classic music on there, unless I really want the album, in which case I import it.

I do like to go to our local electronics stores and browse (they have absolutely huge numbers of DVDs and Blurays), but I also buy from Amazon when there's something specific I want, as I've never had any problems with them.

We have an interesting problem though here in Germany - unrated and 18-rated films and games cannot be sent via mail order in Germany without definitive proof of age, for which you have to pay an extra €5 per item, be at home when it's delivered (you have to accept receipt personally) and drag out your ID card for it. People here call it "Strafversand" - "shipping fine" - in reference to the German government's tendency to constantly antagonise people who play 18-rated games and watch 18-rated movies.

So if there's an 18-rated game or film I want, I'll generally pop down to Media Markt or Saturn to get it. Less hassle and some fresh air to boot. Plus, I usually come back with another game or two as well.

I personally don't pre-order. I'll rent the movie when it comes out, then wait for the price to drop on the BluRay a few months or so later.

When I do buy it, Amazon or BestBuy tend to have the best prices, depending on sales and events.

Well, The Lego Movie DVD is still available for Preorder on Amazon.co.uk. Same case with the Big Bang Theory Season 7 DVD. Maybe, they will become available again later?

While I don't buy movies too much anymore (thanks, Netflix!), when I do buy a physical disc, I usually get them from Best Buy or Target. Both retailers have good sales periodically and usually offer nice retailer-exclusives (bonus content, special packaging, etc.). I am not usually big on buying digital, but I would probably go through VUDU if I was going to. Any movie that comes with a digital copy is viewable through VUDU, so I already have a decent collection there by default.

The only instance of buying a movie through Amazon was when the "Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One - Avengers Assembled" Blu-Ray boxed set came out. They were the first retailer to offer a pre-order for the set, so I went through them without question. I am glad that I did, too. When the set was delayed because of licensing issues with the case, Amazon sent everyone who pre-ordered the set (who, at the time, had yet to give Amazon ANY money) a free copy of the Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack of "The Avengers". That was really awesome of them.

Really lame to hear that they would rather push their Instant Video service than allow people to reserve a physical copy. Still, I would be surprised if this decision doesn't get overturned in the near future. At the end of the day, Amazon certainly doesn't want to alienate its customers.

I stepped buying DVD's. I don't like them accumulating with limited space, and I especially don't like that I'm limited in where I can watch the movie. Then I stopped buying movies period unless I know I am going to watch it multiple times. I now prefer to rent, usually from Amazon. Most of the time I will find something on Netflix. Lastly I really don't watch that much television anyway, preferring to play video games, or spending time on my pc or Nexus 7 reading Facebook, news, or forums.

Up here in Canuckland I buy through Amazon, Best Buy, HMV, Walmart, London Drugs, Superstore, or Future Shop. Whichever has the best deal. Often for something very popular the Superstore will have it as the best price for release day only. Works well for me, since I can buy my groceries and grab the movie/tv show at the same time.

Isn't it a bit early to find a definite pre-order listing for Big Bang Theory though? It usually releases in mid to late September doesn't it? Amazon.ca has no listing for Big Bang Theory 7 yet, but I can pre-order the Lego movie on Blu-ray, 3-D Blu-ray, or DVD.

Well, the preorder is live for .co.uk. And season 8 has fully aired. You are correct that it isn't scheduled until September but they have had the placeholder for several months. I'm not sure why regions would care when preorder's are accepted as long as the release date is honored. (especially when some have been removed after going live).

As for Fryes... I have heard good things but there isn't one near me :( I would also love to support a local shop, but the only ones around aren't very reputable and tend to deal mostly in used content.
