I have a Compaq SR1750NX desktop with a AMD Athon 64 Processor (2.2GHZ) 1.25 GB of Ram, ATI Radeon Xpress 200 Integrated Graphics,

Well today I decided to dump Windows XP and try to install Windows 7 from a clean install. It worked better then I thought. Even though there is no Windows 7 driver for the Radeon Xpress 200, the last driver they released for Windows Vista worked just fine. The audio, everything is installed perfectly from Windows Update and no other hacks were necessary. There are no yellow triangles in the device manager so I assume this is a good thing.

Running really well. I have a Geforce 6200 PCI-e 512MB card on order (No TurboCache, silent cooling - heatsink) and that should complete the upgrade.

I ran SiSoft Sandra to check the disk to see if its still worthy of operation and everything checked out ok.

I still have the restore disks I created for XP Media Center Edition just in case something happens.

But so far I am happy with the upgrade.

Upgraded to a stable os, much like xp.

Best of luck!
Jeez, have you considered upgrading everything else? That hardware is pretty old.

Still, that's quite good that everything is running smoothly. Well done!

I suppose I could add in a USB 2.0 Card and a PCI sound card. Still though this tower was handed down onto me to keep from a person I helped out setting up their new computer transferring the data off the old one and putting it on the new one.

I never was able to learn how to properly upgrade a processor on a motherboard.

I'm not looking to game on the computer heavily just play some games on here. I also have a laptop that I primarily do gaming on and its much more advanced in hardware specs then this desktop has. But still it's good for basic stuff I like to do such as stream online radio from iHeart and so forth.
Why would you bother? XP is a fantastic OS to this day. The only reason to go with Win7 is if you absolutely need DirectX 10+ rendering.

XP had a great run, and I will maintain an XP option in my multi-boot system for as long as the hardware supports it. For many old games, XP is still the best OS to play them on. However, it is undeniably showing its age now, and using XP in an online environment will become a security risk from spring 2014 onward. It's not a bad idea to upgrade.
Win7 is a great OS. You should be happy with it.

because XP is old, and is going to become a major security risk for anyone who is stupid enough to use it online within the next year. Do some reading, no more support means bad things.

Edit: That came across abit rude, sorry. :P

Remember what happened when Win98se and Win2000 stopped getting security updates? That's XP's future. *shivers*

... actually, I don't remember. :o)

But atleast Windows 7 is decent, its gonna be more awful if they create future abominations like Windows 8 and we are forced to that eventually.

Glad to see someone decided to inject some humour into this thread.

Don't worry. I think with the SteamOS being Linux-based, Microsoft is going to end up providing 2 separate OS's per OS gen. Mark my words, there's going to end up being a "Gamer Edition" somewhere in there.
I would upgrade a long time ago, but HP decided to drop support to ALL drivers for my laptop after Vista 32 bit.

Also, how does it work for you, when Win7 requires 1GB of ram for itself?
Umm since we are on the subject, can someone talk me through upgrading to XP? AND don't forget to tell me when I need to take the floppy out and turn it over.

Umm, pop a disc in and follow instructions?

When upgrading, your xp installation will be moved to a separate folder. After you install 7, copy all your important files back from your XP install then go into disk cleanup and select the option to remove your old windows install. I suggest backing up your XP install to an external drive before you start just to be safe.

edit: Wait you said to XP? Sorry, I can't allow such foolishness. Goodbye.
