In Flames isn't really death metal but it's the closest I'll ever get to liking it.

Shiiiiit cat where do I even begin.

Molested, Norwegian death metal (yeah there was more besides black metal going on there in the early 90s) made probably my favorite album of all time (actually the only album they've ever done), Blod-draum, an album with lots of subtle melodic quirks and strange folk passages. Like skulking around a dead woodland area while possibly being stalked by the Jersey Devil and a tribe of the creature's weirdo hippie cannibal worshipers. Two favorites that display this well in full,

Following the Growls: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2BcPe0tX1o

The instrumental title track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebLinw0nDdM

Or, hell, just listen to the whole album here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfGr3lGuuGY

RUNNERS UP:

DEMILICH: greatest death metal vocals of all time! A twisted and mangled-sounding abomination!

Everything they've ever made is also free to download from their website, with your choice of mp3, ogg and flac formats! http://www.anentity.com/demilich/download.php

INFESTER: the album cover about sums up the experience.

Full album, as always: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_5giGIstkg

MASSACRA: absolutely KICK ASS! And also elite music for the elevated Nietzschean mind and Wagnerian spirit (thanks, ANUS.com!).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUkjeLVqZQc

And yes, you get to hear the full album too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCWphG-wKik

P.S. Gorguts released JUST THIS YEAR their magnum opus, Colored Sands. Must-listen!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cg6bWoH_aUU

Sorry, no full album this time :( You CAN however, listen to their other most beloved release, Obscura:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1X0Bejwnko

P.P.S. For newcomers and fans alike, this three-disc V/A compilation is amazing! Swedish Death Metal it's called, almost everything you could want from Sweden's early days (late-80s/early 90s) of death metal.

http://www.amazon.com/Swedish-Death-Metal-Various-Artists/dp/B002PHVH7Q/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1386454287&sr=8-2&keywords=swedish+death+metal

For fans of the "Gothenburg" melodeath sound (Dark Tranquility, In Flames, Amon Amarth, Soilwork, the last At the Gates album, you know the drill), sorry, you won't find representation here. But maybe you'll like it all the same, because all of it, from the crappy-sounding demos to the material from more "professional" full-length albums, is great.

I would have to go with Cannibal Corpse.
I will choose the winner in a few hours, so this is your last chance to share some fine Death Metal.
My vote goes to Entombed. It was my first contact with death metal and is still one of my favourites. Especially their first albums, Clandestine being my personal favourite, here is track 4 from that record:

For something more recent with a more melodic touch, check out the Resistance with ex In Flames, Haunted and Grave members:

Oh, memories :D so many great bands from early 90's - Death, At The Gates, Dismember, Obituary, Entombed, Vader, Morbid Angel, Deicide, Benediction, Bolt Thrower, Cannibal Corpse and many other...

...but Pestilence's Out Of the Body is still the best track of all time!
