TheEnigmaticT: I actually think that Galaxy Quest is a much funnier sendup of the space movie genre than Spaceballs. Tim Allen and Alan Rickman crack me up in that film.
You think so because it's true. ; )

There are a few fantastic lines in Spaceballs, but Galaxy Quest is a great movie, period.

On the opposite end of that, you have 2001: A Space Travesty, which we will all pretend never, ever happened.
Aliens (First was good, second was great)
Serenity
Star Wars (Ep 4-6, theatrical not special ed)
Star Trek Wrath of Khan
And I liked 2010 better than 2001 because it made sense.

Apollo 13 is up there somewhere too. And yeah Lexor, Space Above and Beyond was really good. I wish it had a movie.
I have a legitimate question guys.

am I the only one that found 2001: A space odyssey to be long and boring?

i'll admit the film has a few scattered gems in it, but most of it in my opinion is just bland.

so favourite space films eh?

in no particular order.

Wrath of Khan
The Empire strikes back
Galaxy Quest
Alien
Wall-e
and as an honourable mention
Starship troopers

It's the worst movie I have ever seen. The book, on the other hand, is great.
So a couple questions...apparently everybody likes Alien and/or AlienS...I've never seen either (apparently I'll have to now ;)...but are the 3rd and 4th not as good? And does Alien Vs. Predator have anything to do with that series? Whether it does or not is it good?

And honestly I haven't seen a whole lot of space films (well...actually I guess I have... ;) but I've READ a good deal of space BOOKS...now THERE'S an interesting list!! ;)

Also just my personal opinion...I've seen several of you put 2001: A Space Odyssey at the top of your list...and some of you have said it's awful. My personal opinion is that from a cinematic view point it's AMAZING. They did stuff with cameras and effects that weren't even close to duplicated for YEARS afterwards.

On the other hand (And I haven't read the book [sadly] so maybe that's why) the speed (or distinct lack thereof) of the movie, and the ridiculous...um...whatever you call it at the end, made you leave with a combination of thoughts ranging from "That was really cool!" to "I just wasted almost 3 hours of my life" and "WHAT THE #&@! WAS THAT?!?!?!?" (in either a good way or a bad way). ;) lol!!

Alien 3 is great (better than the space opera that is Aliens)
Alien 4 is special and I don't really like it nor dislike it. It has no flavour to me

Yes, the first two Alien movies are classics, while the third one had a mixed reception (personally, I liked it). The fourth part is kind of meh and unnecessary. Alien vs. Predator is a crossover between the Alien franchise and the Predator franchise. They made two AvP movies, which are both pretty terrible.

In my opinion, as the series goes on it gets worse, alien being amazing, aliens being great, Alien 3 and 4 being good.

but fucking avoid AVP, they're the same aliens but Jesus Christ... Paul W.S Anderson needs to be shot for that abomination.

The second? it's even worse, and completely tasteless.

You'll be getting a lot of responses I suspect. Here's mine.

Alien was a good suspense movie. It was about being hunted

Aliens was a good action movie. It begins about being the hunters, moves towards the hunted, while keeping an element of power with the humans.

Alien 3 was a good theme movie, it developed the overall story, brought in personality and character that was lacking in the previous two.

Alien 4 was a cash in. Joss Whedon's scripting couldn't save a blatant money maker. I really don't understand anyone defending it.

Alien Vs Predator 1 & 2: Are just carrying on the cash cow.

Gilou: 2) Starship Trooper (surpirsed that it did not come earlier)
maybe because it was terrible terrible movie? not as bad as battlefield earth but terrible nevertheless. nothing made sense there.

People took it seriously, they didn't get the joke when there was a cheer to the announcement "It's in pain!"
Wow.... most everything's been taken that I can think of... Have to say Moon is awesome, as is Galaxy Quest etc etc.

But I would feel ashamed if I did not mention: any episode (They're technically episodes yeah but I think they count) of Mystery Science Theater 3000 =) ..... especially "The Final Sacrifice" episode..... Rowsdower!

spindown: Sunshine had such potential. I loved the beginning, but the last third totally ruined the movie for me.
At least the ending sequence brought back a lot of the charm.

On balance, Sunshine and Moon are both very good serious SF movies. Silent Running aged well, all things considered.
The three Alien movies [see what i did there?:P], i treat them as one in my head.
Star Trek 2 [and i always watch it with st3 since they connect, like above]
Dune
Forbidden Planet
The Day the Earth Stood Still
Total Recall

Yeah, i'm bad at math. ;)

[edit]
Oh, yeah, i'm also bad at reading. These are my "5" favorite space movies, in no particular order, so they're not "top five" (as in "best five") space movies.

Two. There are two Alien movies. A character as awesome as Hicks survived.
