Hey all

I have no time to browse through older topics, so if anyone has encountered this before, please help.

Yesterday I installed a genuine retail edition of TW2 which I bought last week, to my brand new laptop which also arrived yesterday. After the installation I was not able to right the cd-key when prompted, but I figured out that was because I did not have an internet connection, so I left it for today.

I tried writing it today while having internet, but still nothing, however I pressed "enter" at the screen and the installer just ignored that I hadn't written anything, and went on updating the game and downloading all patches, even the massive 745MB 2.0 patch, installed them all, etc etc, and then I was finally able to play the game. It launched normally, however at 1900x1080 resolution I could see the taskbar underneath the game screen for some reason. At first I thought I'd play a little bit more with the settings once I returned home and would write here if I couldn't figure out what to do.

Upon returning home though, I was not able to start the game at all. I click on the "run the witcher 2" icon, a menu launches but I am not able to click on anything on the menu, not even the X button on the top-right corner to close the window. Worse than that, that little thunder image on the top left of that menu, has not changed to a skull image, like the game is a pirated version or something.

Anyone got a clue?
This is a well known problem with the latest version of the game.

You need a working internet connection and their web site needs to be up to play the game.

See:

for workarounds while we wait for the developers to get round to fixing it :(
Also look for popups hidden behind the launcher. If you try to start the game from the launcher and nothing happens, hit Alt-Tab and look for dialogs from your firewall. It's possible, especially with Windows Firewall on Windows 7 or Vista, to get a firewall dialogue when the network connection you previously used with the Launcher is down. If the dialogue comes up behind the Launcher, you may not see it, and the game will be wedged.

I can make this happen reproducibly, but others have said it is not the cause of their problems. So YMMV.
Use this solution:

i.e. create a shortcut to bin/witcher2,.exe and run from that instead of the launcher.

CD Projekt Red have confirmed the bug, and are therefore presumably working on fixing it. This is also the advice that they're giving to anyone who reports it to their support.
OK guys, thanks, I'll check it out later today.
