Actually, you don't lose the entire patch when your internet dies. The pre-patch download comes in ~300 MB chunks, and any chunks you have when the internet goes out or you exit the downloader will be kept, while the unfinished chunk you're in the process of downloading is lost.
When you restart the download after exiting or having the internet cut out, the bar will start from the beginning but it won't actually try to redownload parts that you already have.
But to answer your question, the pre-downloader is the only legit way to get the patch right now. When the 17th comes and the EE actually comes out, however, it's likely that there will be other options.
