Will the game run on the lowest graphics settings on my nephew's very old PC. Not sure if it meets the minimum requirements as it is fairly old architecture.

Athlon dual core X2 4200+ @ 2500 mhz (socket 939)
2 GB ram
8800 GTS 512 MB

By the way how does it look at minimum graphic settings. There is also the option of running it in window mode at lower resolution than the native 1680 x 1050.

You meet the minimum requirements. How that actually translates into what settings you'll be using and at what resolution, I don't know.

I think the game looks bad on low, especially since the textures become very blocky, but obviously that's a completely subjective opinion. After all, 30 years ago I would have sworn my life on the old Atari systems having amazing graphics.

It will run lowest settings some areas might cause slow downs... When it rain it can slow down also for you. Overall the game still look great. As i have played around with alot of settings on 2 computers (one 8800GTX) and a 580 i can say that you should not play on lower resolutions the least is 1280 x 1024. If you play on anything less you wont be able to read stuff as the text become a blurry mess.

honest opinion is you wont be happy with the performance, even at low settings. the low Ram wont help either, as it will stutter when moving between areas.
