Think it's going to keep the 2e ruleset used in the first two BG titles, or do you think WotC is going to demand they use the 5e ruleset?
If the latter, do you think Larian will fight to compromise to try and "stay faithful" and end us with a new system that is D&D-like, akin to how Pillars of Eternity mirrored 4e?

WotC demanded 5th edition and so (unfortunately) 5th edition it shall be.

A real shame - absolutely love 2nd Edition AD&D and everything it stands for.

The computer does all the math, so it shouldn't make a difference on a video game.

As someone who's grown up with D&D starting from 1E all the way to 5E, I do think that 2nd Ed was needlessly complicated and confusing for newbies to get into. The switch in 3E where "higher is always better" was a good move, I feel, but 4E made a big mistake in making everything FAR too simple. 5E is more of a "return to the roots", although Larian has stated that WotC have given their blessing for Larian to tweak the 5E ruleset slightly to accommodate for the needs of a CRPG if necessary, so what exactly that will mean remains to be seen.

Accept that 5e is a good balance between complexity and simplicity, and just plain intuitive as well. Lower numbers being a good thing just isn't intuitive.

It makes a ton of difference with logistics. If your PC has low thac0/AC you need to figure out how to get around it. This will change who is in your party, what formation they will be taking, and how they will be attacking. Thac0 and AC gets better with lower numbers. This is confusing because everyone instinctively assumes that an increasing number means you are getting more of something. There's no reason to make it so that up means more and down means less.

Although I do have a trick to keep things from getting confusing. When I talk about AC and thac0 I usually supplement it by adding "bonus" or "penalty". So if I say "this armour gives an AC bonus of 5", you immediately know that it is better and don't have to worry about plus and minus nonsense.

But seriously - I haven't played 5E yet, will have to look it up (not that I'm expecting this to be Baldur's Gate as we know and love it anyway. I'll wait with regular breathing until we learn more about it)

Larian said that bg1 and 2 used 3.0 and 3.5. That made me a bit concerned.

WotC want different eras of Faerun to use different rule sets, apparently. I'm hoping 5th translates well. I heard 5th was pretty good.
