For days now I've been searching for a good RPG. One that has actual role playing. One that feels like a real adventure. Seems lately character skills and diversity in RPGs just means a slightly different way to kill bad guys. I'm looking for a game that gives me a party of adventurers and lets me choose how to handle situations and obstacles using either a utility spell, a thief's rope and agility, or my fighter's charm. One that requires me to gear up not just with weapons but tools for an adventure. One that lets me use artifacts like boots of flight or gloves of strength to reach new areas. I've played all the modern RPGs from the Elder Scrolls to Fallout and Baldurs to Divinity and Dark Souls and Zelda. I'm assuming I have to go old school for this and that's cool.

So far I've tried****Might and Magic 7, Wizardry 8, and Wizards and Warriors****. I've only dipped my toe in but wanted to see which one of these were closest to what I'm after or if y'all had any better suggestions. Cause this itch won't stop! Graphically I'm cool going back this far or would even be cool with a graphical/text adventure/rpg if one exists like this.

Appreciate it.
Star Wars fan?

okay then :P

I'm going to say Planescape: Torment, if you haven't tried that yet.
I believe Divinity: Original Sin might be your cup of tea. Maybe you should also try Pillars of Eternity or Drakensang.
Age of Decadence, although I believe you play a solo character (no party).
Thanks for the suggestions. I've played all of these except for drakensang. Tell me more about it?
I loved the text adventure portion of Pillars where you needed certain items and had to choose how to proceed. I just wish a whole RPG game was built the same way.
Have any of you played Wizardry 8, Might and Magic 6 or 7 or Wizards and Warriors?

Hm, I've read about this -but never got into the roman setting and lack of creatures. I like my RPGs as classic D&D as possible. Is it as good as folks say huh? I'm partial to first person RPGs, but I guess I can't be too picky huh?

Is there a classic first person RPG that has what Age of Decadence does?

Ultima Underworld 1 & 2.
It's still on my to-play list, but from what I've read it sounds to me a bit like you're describing
Realms of Arkania

on steam might be another possibility. Recently there was a rockpapershotgun article on it

Quest for Glory series?

It's even graphical/text adventure in the EGA version.

I'll have to check some of these out. It really seems like what i"m after is a classic first person RPG that has adventure game moments that require you to make choices or use items or use the skill of a member of your party. These segments could even be mainly text driven.

Does Might and Magic 6 have any story/choice moments or is it just raise skill/explore, etc?

Might & Magic 7 has one story choice moment, but I don't recall any at 6. Might and Magic games are a bit special RPGs, they have they own way and style, more brutal and leveling style, like clearing few late game dungeons filled with thousands monsters for several hours and such things. 7 is much better.

Drakensang: The Dark Eye (not to be confused with Drakensang Online, a realtively poor hack'n'slash) is one of my all time favourites. Plenty of classes to choose from, great freedom leveling up (within a sensible class system) and a nice cast of somewhat cliched but still likeable characters to gather up to be your team. The graphics were really nice for the time, probably not that impressive anymore but should still hold up nice. You'll get some reasonable variety in how to handle some situations, though not quite as many choices as you might be used to now. But on the other hand there are fun situations were you can figure out new solutions on your own that were not planned for, like for example a very tough fight agains an undead cyclops and his minions, that I couldn't win for the life of me untill I had the idea to load a previous save, and instead of disarming a fireball trap in a corridor lure the enemies into the corridor and have them take a few fireballs to the face. The combat in general is fun, demanding but fair. Over all- there is just this great sense of high adventure about it all, like a classic RPG should have. Hoenstly, rarely have I played a game that captured the feel of a tabletop RPG so well.

There's also a preuel The River of Time, equally fun though shorter.

That's exactly the right game. You beat up to go climb the mountains or you're coming out of them much worse off.it's not a great game and it has aged a lot, but I still thought it was fantastic and certainly there isn't anything quite like it.

Drakensang is in the same world as Arkania. It's quite good.
P. S. You can get drakensang here, drm free, on DVD. It's the first game, second game, and dlc. Just $8.80, free shipping with prime. http://amzn.to/2s0oifc
