Turning movies into TV shows has become more common lately, with entries such as Ash vs. Evil Dead, 12 Monkeys, Bates Motel, Lethal Weapon, Time After Time and Westworld.

Instead of complaining like a sourpuss about everything ("Hollywood is out of ideas!", "How dare they sully the legacy of the Transporter franchise?!", you get the point), and assuming the end product is possible to be good, and maybe even an improvement on the source material (If you ask me Westworld was a 1000 times better than the movie), I ask you this:

Which movies would make for good TV shows?

I vote for The Warriors. The movie is alright, but nothing special in terms of plot and characters. What really sets it apart in my mind is the crazy and colorful world it created. There's a gang of mute, ominous baseball players, another is a gang of mimes, etc. The plot does allow for all the gangs to be showcased in quick succession within the short time frame of the movie, but I would have enjoyed spending more time with each of them.

I am partly influenced in this by The Warriors videogame for PS2 made by Rockstar, which did have a mission based, sort of episodic structure, and showed me how interesting it could be to just watch the gang go up againt the Van Courtland Rangers, or Baseball Furies, or Soho Hi-Hats, in small individual adventures.
Battle Royale would be a good candidate. The movie fells very rushed and you don't get to know most characters.
A tv show would allow for more character development ( I thought Shinji was pretty much butchered in the film version) and interpersonal relationship.
World War Z, and I'm serious. The only problem, I think Walking Dead and it's spinoffs have the zombie market covered.
That depends what we are talking about - a series that would serve as a sequel to the movie(s) like Ash vs Evil Dead, or a series that would be a remake. If it's the latter, then none. Screw that. If it's the former, then Evil Dead sure proves it's something that can work, with the right people involved.

A few ideas

Warcraft- I really liked the movie, and with a feature sequel unlikely, it would be great to see it continue as a tv series. There's plenty of story just waiting to be adapted, and I think it would be a waste of time to reboot, when the movie is perfecty fine as an opening chapter.

Independence Day - okay, the sequel mostly sucked, but I'm intrigued by the premise clearly laid out for the third movie, which we're not likely to ever see. But the premise of Earth spearheading a loose coalition of alien worlds in fight against the invaders, all in the over the top goofy Independence Day fashion, sounds like a great idea for a series, preferably in the "Sherlock" format of having a season comprise of basicaly three tv movies.

Legend- the movie was lackluster in terms of plot, but the visuals were phenomenal and I love the Tangerine Dream soundtrack (as I love all their soundtracks). I think it would be great to return to that world for more adventures, if the style and mood could be recaptured.

Also, since that's something already happening- I'm looking forward to the Dark Crystal prequel series. I don't like the movie nearly as much as the Labyrinth, but that's probably for the better. That way I can look forward to the series with more curiosity and less dread.

Breja: Independence Day
I think they would run out of monuments and famous buildings to blow up before the end of season #2. :P

Well, given the premise I'd assume it would be humans blowing up the aliens' stuff this time.

I know, I was joking. :P
My only concern, possibly a little too Battlestar Galactica-ish?

I don't think so. I mean, BSG was never about fighting back, just about escaping. This, I would imagine, would be more like Wing Commander. Really, the only thing putting really interesting spin on it is the over the top, "big, loud & fun" nature of the franchise. Other than that we just end up with a premise of a very basic space opera.

This. I immediately thought about World War Z when I saw this thread. I'd very much like to watch a WWZ TV series. Provided it's got actually something to do with Brooks' book, of course, unlike that enormous piece of shit movie they did.

But yeah, I'm afraid you're right in that the zombie theme is already too stale by now.
I think that Logan's Run should be remade as both a movie and a TV show. The original movie from the 70s suffered from a relatively low production budget and poor special F/X, and I think a modern update that maybe took a fresh look at ageism and other issues could be interesting.

In particular, I don't think that Logan rebelling should happen until maybe the second season. The first season should give us a full and expansive view of the society with all it's nuances, and then at the end of the first season, the tension could mount as Logan starts to become aware of what kind of state he is serving.

I also think that with the contemporary criticisms of police brutality and racism by the state, it could be time to take a fresh look at what it would mean for someone who was thought to be a loyal servant of the state to rebel against it. Just think of former FBI director Comey's recent testimony as a partial insight into how relevant such a narrative might be.

I don't know about this but I gave the post a +1 because it is one hell of a compelling idea. There are So many ways it could go wrong, but I can't stop thinking about. XD My god, think of the possibilities if they could make it go right.

It pretty much already happened. Confusingly enough it was called Total Recall 2070, but it was much more Blade Runner than Total Recall. Damn good show, too. A pity it only lasted one season.

As far as I know there are actually plans for that, but there's no concrete info yet. It actually has an imdb page, but there's almost nothing there.

I have only a vague memory about this, but they tend to put a million things in production and we only see a fraction of them show up.

Still, if they end up making a grim and gritty drama, about youth and whatever, l'm not as interested. I wish it was more like an anime, where the heroes keep running into and fighting these larger than life gangs and their leaders.
