I recently got a Raspberry Pi with Retropie. Playing many of the old games I remember. And many I didn't have yet!

P.S. Contra is a pain in the butt solo

Possibly my favorite weapon in the game! Well either that or the one down the elevator in that one cave. I never get tired of the awesome sound Gauss weapons make, and the delightful spectacle of exploding a third of a baddie's torso!

Too bad the ammo is so hard to come by. I was able to buy 50 more rounds from San Fransisco. So i guess the Gauss weapons/ammo will be saved for special occasions. I wish I had had it when I happened to run into an Enclave patrol... For now I use the plasma rifle.

Is there some benefit for the Gauss pistol over the Gauss rifle? I bought the latter from San Fransisco, figuring it is probably even more powerful and with a better range? Now I have both...

The Gauss pistol does 22-32 damage and costs 4 action points to fire.
The Gauss rifle does 32-43 damage and costs 5 action points to fire.

So, depending on your action points you may be able to fire the pistol more times in your round.

If memory serves there is a moderately-late-game location with a trader that stocks higher tiered weapons and ammo, though sporadically. So sometimes you'll be able to buy a buttlload of a certain type of fancy ammo, and sometimes not.
edit2: Oh right I see now you mentioned San Francisco. A trader there, I forgot where, usually carries such ammo. I just had the habit of visiting him every now and again to stock up on the difficult to find stuff.

The main advantage of the gauss pistol for me is that it doesn't do that much less damage than the gauss rifle, and uses one less action point to fire. So you can fire it up to a maximum of 6 times in one round if you choose your stats, perks and traits correctly, compared to a maximum of 4 times per round for the gauss rifle.
edit: uhm, so yeah, what groundhog42 said

Still playing Paladin's Quest. I have reached the point were I'm ready to tackle the final boss. However, I am thinking of maybe starting its Japan-only sequel instead.

Anyway, the final boss of Paladin's Quest is ridiculously hard, much harder than the rest of the game. It's a two-part fight, and there is no save point near it (there's a spot where you can recover your HP/medicine, but no place to save). But anyway:

* The final boss can act multiple times per round. Those actions can, individually do several hundred damage, sometimes more, to multiple characters. (For comparison, your party members are likely to have maybe 1500 HP at this point.)

* There's a multi-hit physical attack. If the boss decides to focus on one character, that character will take lots of damage and could likely die, possibly even from full HP.

* It isn't that unlikely for a character to be reduced from full HP to 0 HP in a single round. This becomes increasingly likely if somebody has already been knocked out (what happens when 0 HP is reached). This wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the fact that there is no way to revive mid battle.

* If you are fighting the way the developers intended, only one of your characters can do reasonable damage to the boss; if he gets killed, you might as well consider the battle to be lost. (The other method involves casting the ATBack spell, which causes all physical attacks against the user (and all the final boss's attacks are physical, even those that look like spells) to be countered for half damage; while the main character isn't the only one to get this, only a few other characters can get this spell.)

I *have* beaten the boss, but only after I realized that ATBack would work, and I had played through the rest of the game multiple times over the course of many years.
Just finished Rise of the Tomb Raider and what an awfully boring and linear game.

Currently playing Doom 2016, pretty good and a decent challenge except it must have the worst melee ever in a game.

Right... and it oddly seems even their range is the same (50). I guess the pistol is a better idea then.
Currently playing Subnautica, Stardew Valley, Particle Fleet and Ratchet & Clank - A Crack in Time, depending on my location and energy level.
Getting close to finishing Risen. Ready to go into the volcano. I hear even though Chapter 3 just started, that it and Chapter 4 are pretty short. Which is fine as I have already put 60 hours into it. I totally loved this game. Nice change from Oblivion/Sky Rim.

Just started Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butchers Bay. Really liking it so far. Almost like Half Life 2, with a cool atmosphere.
9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors.

But I also picked up Company of Heroes and Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 I'm hoping I'll get to start soon.
now playing ICO for the first time on Emulator
then i'll play Shadow warrior 2
X3:Terran Conflict, which still cannot be found when searched for among games for sale on GOG.com even though it certainly is for sale here ("Terran Conflict" turns up no results)
I generally dislike and avoid mobile games, but this one was awesome!

And I've started The Witcher (first one); probably this is the third time starting it, but I have a good feeling about this playthrough. Among other things, I'm playing it on my laptop, which automatically makes a game about ten times more likely to be finished, since I spend so little time in my apartment. Still in Chapter 1; a few preliminary thoughts:

1. I am not loving how this game controls, which might be because laptop trackpads were never designed to be gamed with, or might just be because it doesn't control great.

2. Not really feeling the combat, maybe partly because of (1). The different "combat styles" seem kind of pointless, since whether it's fast, strong, or group, you're still just rhythmically clicking.

3. The writing is bad. Sorry. I know it used to be worse before the Enhanced Edition, but it's still wooden and ridiculous. "They're evil dogs!"

4. I (as a player) have basically no motivation. I barely know what these stolen mutigens are, and I exchanged about five sentences with what's-his-name before he snuffed it. Come to think of it, thanks to the amnesia plot device, Geralt is in basically the same boat, motivation-wide. He also doesn't know what mutigens are, and only new dead-guy two days.

5. Amnesia is a cheap plot device.

So those are basically negative so far. However, it's early days, and I'm going to give it a fair chance to wow me with these "tough choices that actually matter" that it supposedly features.
