OK, you really haven't the vaguest clue what you're talking about. The files you download are stored on the CDN. They're transmitted once to the CDN servers, and stay there. When you download a file it's not first coming from GOG to the CDN and then to you, duh. That would defeat the whole point of having a CDN in the first place. Those servers are the CDN. The platform website isn't involved in downloading files.

Oh, I was just testing downloading the 1.63 Cyperbunk Legacy version (a 100GB zip file, yikes!) with a browser, and with it I am getting around 53 MBytes/sec? Just downloading one big file?

Sweet, I am not complaining about that. It seems to matter which file or game you are downloading too, or do those "extras" tend to download faster with a browser?

I tested downloading an extra (not that one), same download speed as games. I get Fastly here with a web browser; I suppose you could have gotten a different CDN for that file. With Galaxy I get Akamai, which is typically about 4X faster than Fastly, or probably more, since I get full saturation with Galaxy. Though there is that thing where downloading multiple files at once with a browser does max out the connection speed.

If your "theory" was correct I wouldn't be getting different speeds with a browser vs. Galaxy. CloudFlare does offer some CDN services (and Steam has in the past used it for some of its static files) but I doubt it's being used for the majority of its major game files etc.

Not that I'm siding with KB though. IIRC Steam uses a complete different set of CDN providers than GOG does... doesn't it host a lot of its files itself?

I didn't check it now but I normally (always) seem to connect to a Fastly server that is located near me in the same country.

I normally seem to get around 20-30 MBytes/sec with web browser downloads from it, but this time I got a bit over 50 MBytes/sec, which certainly was a a positive surprise. I don't recall it being that fast before, and it wasn't earlier either when I tested it a day or two earlier.

In my case, it doesn't seem to matter (much) if I download one or several files at the same time. With some other Fastly servers I tried, they seemed to behave differently, e.g. I would get 4 MBytes/sec with one file, 8 MBytes/sec with two files etc.

As for Galaxy, the last time I tested it, it behaves "oddly" that I get 70 MBytes/sec when downloading offline installers with it (ie. it maxxes out my 75 MBytres/sec internet line), while with normal Galaxy download/install I get "only" 50 MBytes/sec. Frankly, I would have expected the "normal" Galaxy download to be faster, but what do I know...


I still ponder though that when people report here the speeds they get on Steam, do they realize it is Mbits/sec, not MBytes/sec (which is how I think web browsers and IIRC Galaxy report the download speed)? Just make sure you divide the Steam speed with 8, to get a comparable figure...

Yeah, as I mentioned before, I did get a fast web browser game download recently, but it's back to the usual 10MB/s now. If I do simultaneous downloads I get 40MB/s which is the most I can get; Galaxy hits that every time.

As always, in the end it's down to whatever CDN you end up with. As we can see with these numbers, you can't expect the same throughput even with the same CDN, as it varies by location. It does seem that Fastly is consistently slower than Akamai though. (So maybe not the most accurate name....)

In rare circumstances the server was "giving up" on me but like 90-95% of the time i do get pretty solid "values" from GOG, so i can not complain.

Usually at least 20 MB/s is always possible but up to 100 MB/s or even higher has as well been experienced already: Which is, in such a term "cutting edge" because a server speed at this level is still very rare on the net, in general.

Nonetheless, it only works with a sufficiently fast drive of course, especially if there are multiple downloads. This is a demanding thing for any drive, not only for the connection.

Technically i am currently limited to 1 Gbit because my modems 10 Gbit port seems to be faulty. I was to lazy replacing it because the modem is "owned by my ISP" and it can take hours even to reach the support and able to get a new modem this way is a lot of sweat... so i was postponing the issue. My nerves hopefully are ready at some point and 1 Gbit is actually sufficiently fast for me. So i rather wait till the modem is totally giving up, so it is "worth the effort".

So, perhaps GOG is even faster than that... at least for me. I can barely make a screenshot if i do not hurry, else the "meter" is done already.

I think in this case "fast" refers to "fasting", ie. don't download more than you can eat (or play).

I earlier was under the impression that downloading offline installers with Galaxy comes from different CDN (possibly Akamai, not sure), and that is what explains why I e.g. get 70MBytes/sec download speeds with Galaxy, specifically for offline installers (downloading and installing a game directly with Galaxy seems somewhat slower, around 50 MBytes/sec).

So I figured would there be a way to download the offline installers faster with e.g. gogrepoc or lgogdownloader, if they used those non-Fastly CDNs instead, using Galaxy API or whatever is needed to access them?

But then from the lgogdownloader discussion, I got the impression that at least lgogdownloader still uses the Fastly servers even when downloading the "Galaxy version" of a game using the Galaxy API, suggesting Galaxy also uses Fastly...? So I am unsure now what the truth is.

It's possible to select the cdn when installing a game using Galaxy API which lgogdownloader does using the --galaxy-cdn-priority option.
I don't think GOG Galaxy actually allows user to select their preferred cdn, I guess the client selects one randomly from the provided list of cdns.

GOG doesn't provide any way to select cdn for offline installers. I even asked GOG support about this when they still used Highwinds cdn for offline installers and Highwinds cdn had a lot of issues with my vpn.
All offline installers use Fastly cdn or at least I haven't come across any installer that would use any other cdn.
Whether you're downloading via browser or Galaxy client the only cdn used for offline installers is Fastly so if you're getting faster offline installer download speeds using Galaxy then it is because Galaxy splits the installer into multiple chunks and downloads the chunks in parallel.

Apparently "downloading several chunks in parallel" somehow yields faster speeds while downloading several files in parallel doesn't seem to, in my case? If I am downloading with a browser (or gogrepoc), with my local Fastly CDN it doesn't seem to matter much whether I download one or four files in parallel, I still get mostly around 20-30 MBytes/sec total download speed, occasionally faster (like the other day, over 50 MBytes/sec downloading just one file, the 100GB zip file containing the 1.63 legacy version of Cyberpunk 2077).
