deryni: I'd thrown in the ability to mark a game as "owned outside GOG" to simplify keeping track of what games still aren't owned versus aren't owned on gog (yes, this means I have a large enough backlog of games I haven't played that I have a hard time keeping track of games I've gotten) but from GOG's perspective it would mean they could get better demographic information about its users and would even allow them to target people who own the game somewhere else with deals to encourage them to buy it again from GOG to get a DRM-free version (in the case their other copy was DRM encumbered).
MorphysLaw: That would be a very handy one, anywhere. I don't see any distributor doing such a thing, but it'd be great if it were done.
I don't participate in any other distributor communities (and I doubt I'm the only one) but I doubt too many of them have a seriously distinguishing feature such that it would make sense for someone to acquire a game more than once. GOG does though and a number of people have posted that they would pick up game X a second (or third time) if it came to GOG. That's the benefit to GOG as far as I'm concerned. If they pick up even a small percentage of those additional purchases it would likely work out to a win in the long run.
But I agree that I think it is unlikely.
