I didn't really like DAO as much as Dark Souls, but as already mentioned it might be a better choice since Dark Souls isn't really optimized for the pc.

Not that there's anything particularly wrong with DAO. It's just kind of formulaic. I got bored of slogging through combat by the halfway point (since there's some rather long and boring sections like the Fade or the underroads), and had to push myself to finish it.

Yeah, there are long sections, but the great thing about DA:O is there are mods to help with many things that you don't like. If memory serves, there's a 'skip the Fade' mod that allows you to do just that. The Deep Roads doesn't have a mod for skipping it, but I personally enjoyed that section.
Dark Souls has been under $7.49 I believe, either $5 or $6. Dragon Age Ultimate has not gone lower that $7.49 on Steam, but the dragon age bundle for Origin goes for $8-$10 and includes ultimate + dragon age 2. So on principle, don't buy a game on sale that has had a lower sale, and decide which one is the best for you. :)

Gameplay-wise I still need to get to both. Price before <non-existent word for play that rhymes with price>.

As I already said to Judas:I don't do multiplayer / PvP/ co-op etc
and myseryo was kind enought o point out the kb+m controls can be modded to work nicely (from which ive watched a few vids / done some reading) and it certainly doesnt look to be too much trouble for me.
The rest of what you say about DS just makes me more intrigued!

Sachys: Due to a few factors, the christmas money I had been given has had to go on other things (such as the household). An offshoot of this has been lack of spending power these last few days, and with it, not being able to bag some of the sale bargains I've wanted.

Now (thanks to my sister) it seems I'll be able to bag something after all, and with a bit of messing around, I can in fact buy something now.

The two games that I currently find my attention returning to are Dragon Age Origins: Ultimate Edition and Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition (both currently on a decent discount on steam). Given the fact my spending is limited, they both look to be pretty good value for money, both look like games I'd love to play for varying reasons... but I can only get one of them.

As I know plenty of people on here will have played both, which do you think I should go for and why?

Things to note:
Tend to prefer darker atmospheres in games, i dont own a control pad, I'm open to suggestions in a similar price bracket. I'll update if i think of anything else relevant.

Edit: black magic love counselling available! ;)
I've heard Dragon Age Origins is awesome.
If you decide you want Dark Souls, please be confident that you can run it first. The game isn't the best in terms of performance.
Well, for now I'm leaning towards Dark Souls (if I'm only bagging one of the two), but as I've just realised DA:O is on at 75% off for the best part of two days, I'm gonna keep an open mind for now - and also hope DS turns up on a 75% or 80% daily or flash sale in that time. Either way I ideally want to be getting something sooner rather than later (as I said I've a week off looking after my dad starting tomorrow, so including download times on my poopy connection, it's also a considerable factor as well).

Thanks for all your input folks, and if you think of anything else / perhaps spot anything else that comes up on a good deal... please let me know!

:)
The multiplayer in the Souls games works pretty differently than most games, and is a big part of the experience.

On the other hand if you want to avoid it completely if you stay hollowed out (since IIRC players can't invade you unless you're in human form, leaving just a couple scripted npc black phantom invasion events).

(I can understand, I'm not into multiplayer/online at all either)

I'm a keyboard and mouse user myself, I haven't touched the gamepad I bought for $6 for quite some time, until I got Dark Souls. So it speaks for itself that I'm bad with a controller, but I still prefer it over kb+m in Dark Souls. It is not very well optimized for PC, and after a while playing the game with a controller now, I can't imagine going back playing it with an different controlling device.

If you should decide to get Dark Souls, as mentioned before by others make sure that you install DSfix (might have to try different versions, 2.2 works for me) to improve the visuals.
And use a controller, (if you do) you don't need an expensive xbox controller, it can be a cheap one like my $6 PS-like controller, just install the x360ce controller emulator.

A word of warning: some people reported trouble getting the game to run. But most problems people have are due to not reading instructions thoroughly.

Well... I think the "invading him" part will be a selling point for Sachys.....

Well, the multi isn't the same here as it is in other games as you don't really communicate to each other the same way nor do you go into a lobby of some sort. It's more random and really dependent on your level so you won't have some high level person invading you because you'll most likely be too low level. You also get a crystal that allows you to banish invaders IIRC. On top of that, there doesn't seem to be as much PVP on the PC side of Dark Souls as you'd have on the consoles so you might not ever encounter another player.

Besides, farming invaders is the best way to get more souls which are the currency in Dark Souls :D

Hmmm. Doesn't sound so bad I suppose. Does that mean it also requires an always online connection - or is it purely optional?!

The game uses the net for save games, not sue how it's going to be once they patch out GFWL. You can play without worrying about people invading you, just stay hollow :)
