I usually lose hours until i get an initial build that satisfies me. So, i can understand your way of gaming:)

Sachys: Little update - decided to go against buying DA:O whilst the offer was on, and grabbed DS just about an hour ago, considered waiting for a better deal, but I wanted to play the game quite badly after rereading some of the comments on here, and reading up on it a bit more.

Cheers for the help guys, I'll no doubt pick up DA:O at some point anyways! :)
Booooooooooh! :P

Just don't miss out on DA:O, it's a great game =)

wolfsrain: Read about some successful builds, chose one that suits you best and stick to it. The available builds have also recommended weapons and armors, so make sure that you learn the locations from where to get them. Many of the most powerful weapons and armors can be easily missed.
Doesn't that ruin part of the game? You know, avoiding hand holding and shortcuts?

My brother went on a little about how awesome the game is because of its raw challenge and all that then I noticed him alt-tabbing frequently to read on the Wiki for stats and mini-guides. I mean sure, I do stuff like that myself sometimes but it kind of goes against the core of the game unless it's all about the feeling of challenge, not an actual challenge.

I'm similar myself - unless I'm utterly stuck / lost I try to avoid guides / wikis, though I will sometimes have a read up if I find myself confused generally after the first hour or so.
In the case of DS I may end up doing so - but I think some of the basics I've seen in one or two of the videos I've watched should do me to begin at least.
DA:O has dreadfully boring combat and zero exploration. Go with Dark Souls.

Trust me, the game is challenging enough with faqs. The builds are ensuring a longer survival, they don't offer a sure win. DS is a game that relies on reactions and properly timed attacks. That's where the actual challenge is. A build offers a better chance of survival, but it doesn't make you invincible. To gather all the needed stuff, you will probably have to suffer a few lengthy playthroughs.

Well, at least now I know why I have disliked the game so much :-P
Well, grinding is part of the game...:P

even at the 66% mark it had me as something of a bargain (ie looks like ill play it through more than once)
Just be sure to use a gamepad, M&KB is broken.

apparently with some simple modding its not.
besides, people said the same about sleeping dogs and a few other games I won and I did fine with them
So the base controls and on screen tutorials in regards to that are a bit gash.
So far the game is damned nice - still need to tweak the base mods and get used to it, but I bloody love it so far! :)

Sweet, I hope kb&m will let you play through the game without too much trouble.
I saw it on the nexus mod page http://www.nexusmods.com/darksouls/mods/99/ did you pick this up too? I saw it and thought it could be useful to learn the keystrokes.

Praise the sun. ;)

As there's no real description (that I can see) am I right in assuming it removes the keypad hints and swaps them for the reconfigured kb+m controls?
if so that will indeed be handy! cheers!

I only know what it says in the mod description, it replaces the controller button hints with the keyboard equivalents, if it covers rebinded keys, I don't know. Hope it helps. :)
