How dare they not have Bi-Tri-Polar-Pan-Amoeba In Transition as a selection. :P

itchy01ca01: There are a few religious bigots in this thread that are completely against homosexuals or trans gender peoples. They think they are "sinning", which to me is just as bad as hating them.
Isn't thinking that their religion is wrong... hauntingly similar?
"Well - as long as you don't deny them the freedom to believe what they want and practice as they please, you're not really hurting them", you might say. Doesn't it work both ways?
As long as people don't get in each other's way, I think things are fine. If the WORST reaction atypical people get is "I don't agree with you, but I won't stop you either", that's a thing to celebrate.

Telika: And, heck, if an intrusive internet social network wants accurate answers, it makes sense to let the "Catholic but not always because most of times a little buddhist still leaning towards new age when i read ufo stuff but going to church when my grandma asks me to on easter but otherwise only praying twice a month" option available. But...

Is it really something to get all riled up about ?
For those who want to exhibit - this option, or that (from these 50 or some other list) might be fine, but...

...I would guess that the platform itself does not give a toss how these persons might feel about themselves, but how they might click, like or connect for marketing trends data.

Diversity is nothing to get riled up about, but it is something that might possibly be used. Therefore, I always understand a certain discretion as well in platforms such as Facebook.

What to me is more relevant is de-facto diversity. This I think is certainly lacking, as I have never had an openly homosexual manager, and even a female manager has been one in six minority.
I bet there's quite a few people who are disappointed that the option: Merman/Mermaid is not included.

I think either you or me are over thinking something. Probably me.
I wonder if the options are restricted to age.

Also, what FTM and MTF means?

Also, I wonder how many kids that create their fb accounts without their parent's consent will start asking about those new type of genders.

Mentao goes away and finds his son's fb account to check if his gender has changed

Mentao: Also, what FTM and MTF means?
Female-to-male: woman having had surgery to appear male, complete with appropriate (non-functioning) parts
Male-to-female: vice versa

Telika: I don't think this stuff is very serious. Many of these terms are redundant, meaningless, just rephrasing. It's the next best thing to allowing people to type in what they want - actually trying to let them choose whatever variant and formulation they might want.
I think that is part of the Great Plan that FB *has* to become a major statistical organism. This is an hypothesis formulated in my quest : does FB has any real use ?
I started seeing utility a couple of years ago when a guy crunched a lot of "coupling" statistics (single, married,..) and created a 'break up calendar' showing when (as in "which day out of the 365+ we are constantly looping") people were more likely to be mating up than breaking up.
Giving a real leeway for people to define their sexuality may give them an edge in statistical authenticity.

Sidenote : When do you plan on releasing Santa ? You really don't want to be his excuse when he will have done half the job at the end of the year. Just saying.

That said, I guess it's nice they provide these options on websites, for those who have use for them. *shrug*

DrakoPensulo: Well, maybe it is nice but it can be dangerous for people who label themselves using these "gender states". FB operates worldwide. Imagine that somewhere in the world a new hitler or stalin raises to power and decides to exterminate "gender" people in his country. Using FB he would be able to create a list of these people easily....
If it comes to that, I'd imagine Facebook would be the least of our problems. :P
