Wow, good answers!
nightrunner227: That's not really fair, considering a large portion of the games on the free bundle are rpgmaker games, which means the makers have no choice other than pixel art. Not to mention it's easier to make a game for free if it uses either pixel art or cheap 3d (thanks to stuff like unity).
I'm not saying you don't have a point (you do, and I tend to agree), but your examples are not drawn from a proper population.
Good point! Still, I think RpgMaker supports 640x480 px? Look at what
Harvester managed with that resolution!
zavlin: Well, the thing about free games is.... they are free. Really dont have much ground to stand on to say free developers are making too many pixelated games, when they have no budget. Theres a potential point there somewhere, but you spent way too much of your argument on free games, the developers who literally owe you nothing ;)
Yes, the game are free. But shouldn't freeware games be taken just as seriously as games that are sold? I think debate about free indie games is just as important as debate about AAA-titles. If free-indies tends to suck a certain way, it should be addressed.
True:: indies don't have much budget, so they can't just hire some graphic artists. But with the internet and everything, it must be possible to hook up with some artists, who are willing to provide free art for a free game.
MaximumBunny: GAME DEBATE: Making threads about things I dislike that I feel should forever be removed from existence must die!!!!
And the people who make them should be banned forever from everything. Sorry, but off with their heads! Step up to the chopping block.
You know, somehow I agree. Being negative and complaining about what one dislikes is a fine reason for execution. However, my post wasn't as much about disliking pixelart as it was about that I really like 2D artwork, and that I think that it is sad that so many indies are stuck at the pixelart trope.
KasperHviid: Also, I'm generally a bit tired of retro-games. There is is something a bit depressing about the constant re-cycling of whatever a pushing-forty player experienced in his childhood.
Mentalepsy: If we ever reach the point of "constantly recycling" the kickass games I played as a kid, I'll let you know. Most pixel art games are "retro" like a Hot Topic store that plays disco.
I dunno, there's certain retro games that are offering offendingly hard gameplay, such as
THEY BLEED PIXELS and
HOTLINE MIAMI.
