Zurvan7: Aah sorry to hear that, makes me sad but I think life is like that and I don hope you find a way to get over it. Everyone has to move on in life even though it's hard sometimes.

pimpmonkey2382: Agreed, and thank you for your thoughts. Though sometimes easier said than done as she was like a best friend to me.
Damn man :( like birth, death is a phase in life that we all have to experience but it's so damn hard. But I think being able to remember the good and happy moments might give you some comfort and no one can't take those thought from you. I bet if our love ones were still alive they wanted nothing but happiness for us.

If you ever felt sad you can always PM or chat me up :)

Thanks man, I agree, and I appreciate your friendship. I am very grateful. :)
Amnesia, Outlast, Penumbra...
More seriously perhaps Little Inferno, Minecraft, Waking Mars.
Those are a few of the games I've played whilst dealing with my own anxiety issues.
If a sound bothers you, change it. Change your ringtone, change your alarm, change the materials of your doors to one you like hearing knocks on. Unhappy with the mail? Change your mailbox to something that makes you smile.

Life is only what you make of it regardless of any conditions, relationships, employment, etc. that you have. If you let everything overwhelm and disturb you then the results are always going to be the same. You must learn to love yourself and love life.

I've seen it happen, going from anxiety to none at all over a concern that was causing the problem. Stress/Anxiety tend to do more damage than any ailments or situations. The last thing you want to do is be hospitalized over a stupid bill, for example. :P
Torchlight and the sequel. Just click click click. Never get stuck. Satisfaction from all the colorful explosions.

BRILLIANT!
No shit, I mean it. It's colorful, fast, a great stress reliever while at the same time being somewhat challenging yet not frustratingly so. Very nice suggestion, but with no disrespect to GOG, I think #2 kind of blows #1 out of the water.

I also think #2 is far above #1. It's just so simple, can't do much wrong with torchlight 1 or 2.
I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor able to diagnosis and (attempt to treat) psychoatric conditions. Video gaming might serve as a good diversion for anxiety by serving as a distraction; however, keep in mind other coping strategies. One thing that helps me is to use visual imagery (it's silly but sometimes I still pretend I'm Robocop in my head when dealing with certain things), coping statements (something funny, or motivational you can repeat in your head), and also focusing on your bodies physical reaction (some experts believe perceived anxiety is caused by heightened breathing and heart rate, which if reduced will lower anxiety - you can control breathing and heart rate if you attend and try). One important thing is that you're not alone in dealing with anxiety, no matter how alien it feels, and there are other people who can help and support you - don't isolate yourself and depend too heavily on video games as a substitute for social support when available.

For video game diversions I've been on a metroidvania kick lately - try Rogue Legacy or Unepic. Sometimes battles are heated but exploration is always fresh and enemies often familiar enough to become button smashing fodder.

justanoldgamer: Anyone else here with an anxiety disorder?

Do you know of games that helps?

Some of my triggers are the phone or doorbell ringing, knocking at the door, receiving government mail and to a lesser degree bills.

Weirdly enough, violent horror movies help but not horror video games. Reading also help but I'm searching for a more interactive way to treat the symptoms. Games where one can easily get stuck are also not a good idea.
Speaking as a fellow sufferer (all of those things are big triggers for me, too.), any game that you find you can become completely immersed in, this of course varies for different people (sorry I can't be of more help than that.). For me the relief comes when I can, for at least a little bit of time, stop thinking about those triggers.
I have anxiety attacks, so much so I have meds on hand to treat it when it gets really bad when my heart beats too fast like having an onset heartattack. It is quite scary. Luckily I don't get them too often. I would try to avoid or change the triggers of them. I know its very difficult, for its still an ongoing battle I'm trying to get better.

Games are a nice distraction and can vouch I would be in much worser shape without them. It's all in preference of the individual what you can find relaxing. Try different genres, FPS, RPGS, indies whatnot and you'll find what works.

My best of luck to you.

I don't suffer from anxiety disorders, but if you're looking for games to help someone unwind, I usually play Shattered Horizon, Warframe or State of Decay. Usually any games where I don't have to fight other people.

Also, what I saw when I saw your thread

I like listening to the Beautiful game music Sometimes helps calm my nerves!
Any game with strong immersion and micromanaging. Things like baldurs gate, fallout, planescape torment, are good examples. If you like point&click adventures also recommend: primordia, longest journey, gabriel knight.
If you have consoles, you could also try okami. Really excellent and beautiful game.

This is an incredibly insensitive post.
Mental illness doesn't just magically go away because you want it to. If I could have solved my anxiety problems by making little changes to my surroundings, I would have done so 16 years ago to avoid living in pure hell this entire time. Painting my doorknob and putting pictures on my door (I really did this - a lot,) did not help me overcome my anxiety of opening my bedroom door from the ages of 17-21. Neither did replacing the entire door. Writing funny and inspirational quotes on the back of my hand when I had (and still have) a fear of washing my hands didn't help.

The problem is not what a phone or doorbell sounds like. The problem is that these sounds mean you have to interact with another human, and that you are potentially in for horrible news, or a murderer at your door. Changing the sounds do not change your fears.

I'd love to let things stop overwhelming me and disturbing me. I'd love to let little things affect me less. I'd love to love life. Unfortunately, people with mental illness can't do that very well. For people with mental illness, life is not what they make of it. Life is dealt to them before they are born, and they have to live with it possibly forever.

I realize this may sound ridiculous, but it is true to many people with mental illness. Someone telling someone with mental illness to "learn to love life," or "only you have the power to change," or "you need to learn how to not be depressed and anxious" is basically as ridiculous as saying, "You need to teach yourself to not have cancer."
Just like any other disease, you can't will it away. Changing the little things around you might help a little, but that is just putting lipstick on a pig. And that lipstick will wash away very quickly and easily.

You make it sound like preventing anxiety attacks is so easy. It requires an insane amount of work and money just to attempt preventing anxiety. I have seen a dozen doctors, been in therapy for years, been on ~25 medications, and even had electro-convulsive therapy to try and get help from my problems. These problems have destroyed my life, and many of the attempted cures have made things significantly worse.
This is literally a second to second battle for survival, so please try not to make it sound so simple.
