Fenixp: I don't really give a toss about Banished, not my thing either. What I oppose to are generalization, such as that most indie games are either shovelware or crap. You know what vast majority of non-indie games are? Hidden object games, farmville clones, bejewelled clones, that kind of stuff, now that's shovelware. I'm not disputing that most indie games indeed are crap, they are - but that doesn't only apply to indie games, that quite simply applies to most games ever released. Only in case you want to apply your filter to high-budget AAA titles, you get into territory where most games are at least passable as they get a solid share of QA - but by doing so, you'd be selectively looking at such a small percentage of the market that such a statement becomes completely negligible.
I agree that there are very few great games that have been released in the last 11-12 years
I stopped buying / playing games in 2002 / 03 and got back into it last year and was surprised at how bad things were in the pc market.

C&C got raped by EA
unreal tournament wasn't a thing anymore
everyone sucks up COD every year but is essentially the same game year in year out with 4 dlcs each
DRM has gotten obnoxious

for reference these are the games I have that I would consider reasonably decent

since 2003 these are the games I would consider buying

Portal,
portal 2
halflife 2
Doom 3
GTA 4
mirrors edge
starcraft 2
diablo 3

there may be more but its not a huge list - so yes over the last decade lots of game have been released but there are very few I would have an interest in - its the same in the indie market

but since some of these have obnoxious drm I wont be buying all of them anytime soon
you forgot FMV games to add on the shovelware list(but there are fantastic games of the genre)

I've seen some gameplay videos of Banished and it's seems like a good game, not my type of game but it's not shovelware.and as Fenixp said, not all indie games are shovelware, take the games by Wadjet Eye or VVVVVV and Treasure Adventure Game, really great games

Fenixp: You mean as opposed to all the games released at 1996 which are uniformely remembered to this day. This includes classics such as Bang Bang Ball, Cool Boarders or Chess Mates. Oh, right...

Spoilers: Banished is widely considered to be a good game.

Oh well, at least you enjoy your trolling :-P

maybe i should have been more general and just said <insert random indie game title>

and coolboarders on the psx was actually pretty ok , much like tony hawks except with snowboards

I can't speak for the Steam laden BFG version but I have regular ol' Doom 3 on disc and there isn't any DRM to speak of, if that is what was worrying you. There are some serious problems but they are totally game related, not tech, and once you get used to them they are actually really funny (you think a highly trained space marine could hold a pistol and a flashlight at the same time! :P). Point being for a great looking great sounding edge of seat shooter with some faults of logic that might make you scream then I wholly recommend Doom 3.
Given the original post, I'd say it was HumbleBundle that sold out rather than GOG - HB used to provide DRM-free, cross-platform titles and now the majority of bundles are Steam keys only. *spit*

HypersomniacLive: Completely confused - can someone explain to me what the content of the OP has to do with the thread title?

Grargar: I assume he is referring to GOG selling expensive games, as opposed to the $5.99 and $9.99 games it used to.
Yes, and the lack of retro titles now. This is not what the creators envisaged this site to be.

PS. I purchased the ENTIRE Angry Birds series, plus a few other PopCap games on disc for a song, also Assassin's Creed 1 & 2, but I have neither installed nor played them due to online activation (my gaming rig is always-offline).

Regarding another ongoing thread, do I have to show tolerance to this guy?
I remember what this site was like originally, during that first glorious period.

Now it is just a mini-Steam, and the new titles are rapidly overtaking the retro titles.

PS. $5.99 and $9.99 titles are pretty rare these days too.
