RevolutionSphere: Diablo 2 is recommended for most rpg fans, also be a barbarian.
But yes totally get this classic.

langurmonkey: And if you are the lazy type, be a necromancer.
I like to play as barbarian when playing solo, but when playing with other playing people, I'm happy to be a necromancer.
I used to have Diablo II and the expansion until I lost one fucking CD... This is why I support digital...

There is a reason that "Diablo Clone" has become a common term in game description. Mark my words, pretty soon it will be a category onto it's own; you'll log onto GOG and see RPG, FPS, RACING, PUZZLE, DIABLO CLONES.
Diablo 2 is one of those games you can play solo or with a group of friends. Its desgined so well and the TC's and mods for it are amazing!

800x600 is all you get, they do have a window mode though and the latest patch has it working on x64 windows 8.

Personally i have it installed in every system i own. All in all i have about 5 physical copies over the years and 3 digital ones :)

Now that im thinking of it, thats the same amount of copies i have of The Witcher.... coincidence? I THINK NOT!

I thought the best thing about D2 and it's expansion were the cutscene movies, they were so well done, the voice-acting, the music and sound, they reeked of this insane atmosphere that sucks you in. Shame about the actual game though, there's almost no story in the actual gameplay parts at all, the player character is just following Marius and the Dark Wanderer and cleaning up the demons attracted as they moved into the East.

Strange that it called itself a "roleplaying game", because when I think about Diablo (both games) what comes to mind is the complete lack of any role at all the player has, nothing in the game can be changed by anything you do. At least other action "RPGs" actually gave the player a bit of leeway to make superficial choices, hope Diablo is completely linear.

It has good music, nice graphics, good voice-acting, excellent dark atmosphere, good animations, basically everything except for... anything about being a roleplaying game.

But yeah if you think of it as an horror action game like Blood Omen it's fine.

ErekoseDM: but def play Diablo 1 first as aries mentioned.
both D1 and D2 are fin awesome.
Although, if you do end up playing them both, keep in mind that they are very different games. In fact, they are so different beyond their basic gameplay that it's kind of hard to regard them as part of the same series.

I preferred D1 myself, but I'm well aware that I'm in the minority in that regard. Nevertheless, Diablo II is a good game and is the one that helped define modern action RPGs, so you should definitely check it out.
Diablo 2 is probably one of the very few games that I have (almost constantly) installed on my PC.
It is a classic in every aspect, as far it concerns me, and yes, you should definitely try it.

If you ask me it's one of my most favourite games of all time, so yes, don't even question yourself on this one.
I finished Diablo 2 and it was a good game, but i enjoyed Sacred and Titan Quest more.

Diablo series is an ARPG (about maxing your skills, stats, and constantly getting crazy-loot to swap-out/upgrade) - extreme emphasis on the letter "A" for ACTION here.
Your choices lie there in that stuff, NOT in morality stuff like BioWare RPG's or The Witcher games normally aim for.

Diablo series not a "true-blue" RPG, if that's what you mean (i.e. to me a true-blue RPG has some emphasis on your characters stats & some emphasis on your decision-making stuff for how events turns out for NPC's, game-world, and the ending).

If gamers want hack-n-slash loot-fests - Diablo 2 + LOD expansion; both Torchlight 1 + 2; Divine Divinity; Sacred 2: Gold; & Titan Quest: Gold should be on your list. For ARPG's - those games are where it's at, for sure. Those games are awesome.

Titanium: Oh, you want to rush me over the corpses of your fallen comrades? It'd be a shame if they... exploded.
Loved that skill. Killed many stronger enemies by exploding all the corpses of their minions.

I would melee attack using Necromancer too, I couldn't just stand there and watch my undead army have all the fun, I had to get in on the action.
Diablo 2 is well worth the play. Gameplay is still fun and a lot better than number 3.
