dr.zli: posting in a troll thread
How is this a troll thread exactly? I understand I should have done a great deal more research before downloading a preview like an idiot, and I do recognize my mistake. I also should have thought this through more instead of complaining on the GOG.com forums about it and making everyone else's lives harder(as if they're not hard enough), but that doesn't mean I posted this to get a watch-the-train-wreck laugh out of anybody trying to help, which, last time I checked, defines the word "troll" in internet speak. I really don't know how you came to that conclusion, but however you did it's definitely not true.

MARATHON !

I remember those games, I only ever finished number 2 as the first one was too hard for me.
They have been available for free from http://marathon.sourceforge.net/ for a long time now. I only wish that GOG could get a deal to host them here for free, it might save the guys some bandwidth, and get these classics the attention they deserve.

When I first read this post I thought Microsoft had released a "patch" for Windows that did what one of the early Win 7 patches did.
I do not remember which one it was, but an early patch for Win 7 caused a lot of computers to corrupt part of their registry. Meaning you had to go in manually and restore the registry to get it working properly again.

Supereor:
This is not a troll thread. You had a legitimate problem, and asked in an area where you can be sure there are many members with a very good understanding of computers and their systems.
The only thing you did wrong was to trust Microsoft without reading their EULA.
You should ALWAYS read EULA's (though most people wont), especially with companies ready to use their own rights to belittle yours.

We had an incident at work a couple years ago, where our antivirus application (McAfee) got an update that detected an important Windows file as infected (though it wasn't) and thus shoved it into quarantine - making Windows bluescreen and preventing it of booting up.

McAfee promptly sent out a new update not mere hours later, but not before several machines had been disabled.

Sure, it was the antivirus' fault, but on some level it could be said that "Windows infected the computer", and there were obviously jokes to be had about Window being a virus.

This has nothing to do with EULAs. The Windows 8.1 Preview was specifically a time-limited offering so users could try the new version ahead of release with the expectation that those doing an in-place upgrade to the preview would then do an in-place upgrade to the final version through the same process once the final version was available.

The final version was generally available on October 18, 2013, so those using the Preview version had from then onwards to upgrade to the final version (or alternately downgrade to Windows 7 or earlier in the case of those not upgrading to the preview from Windows 8).

Most of the time, no, not really. Although there are times when my age sneaks up from behind and kicks me in the ass.

Supereor: My computer just restarted. Just, out of the blue(screen) restarted. I thought I could have had a virus, from what, I have no idea since I'm usually very good at keeping my PC clean, but whatever was the issue I was very worried. The computer rebooted and I went on my web browser and got back to what I was doing, hoping whatever caused that wouldn't cause that again. I use(or have used) the Windows 8.1 preview and not the full thing - I was under the impression you would gain additional features once you upgrade to the full version, but since I never needed it, I didn't use it. So, I just saw this message pop up on my laptop -
"Reinstall Windows Now
-----------------------------------
Your license to use this evaluation version of Windows has expired. Your PC will restart in one hour and will continue to restart every two hours. Get the latest version of Windows to avoid these interruptions."

So, for downloading what I thought to be just a really big update of Windows 8 at the time, as well as you constantly advertising it as a free download on my computer, I have to give more money to Microsoft or deal with this new virus.

...

So, I hear those Macs are looking pretty good. I've also been checking out the PS4, looks like a good idea :)
Ouch... the Windows virus... that stings lol...

I don't like Windows very much, I have a laptop with 7 on it and it's ok but after about 2 years it began telling me that my "windows.exe file is currupt" which... well is what starts freaking Windows! as well it black screens and blue screens all the time, and seeming how I used it only for school (aka using Microsoft word) there's no explination as to why it screws up all the time...

As for Macs, I just got one and it's pretty nice, well not for gaming due to the lack of games but for the more creative buisness (like music creating/recording) it's perfect. *Sidenote, I only use my mac for school work and recording for my band, I'm not a hispter lol... oh and Simcity 2000!

Theres no such thing as windows.exe. You might have been attacked by a malicious software.
Impossible because before it gave me that warning the laptop was never connected to the internet. It was Windows Launcher or something, it was Windows something .exe. when ever that error occurs the windows OS it's self doesn't load, not even Alt, Tab, Delete will work, it's just a black screen, like I bricked it, but after a restart it's fine.

Aaah, you took my forum title thingy as an indication that I am a troll. Well, I certainly try not to be, and the forum title was just a joke that you must not have found funny. I can deal with that, I just wanted to sort out the fact that I am not a troll to you, as I know many people, including myself, dislike trolls.

Mayybe Windows Explorer, the user interface / desktop shell / file system manager / whatever you call it. But then, this cannot get corrupt by itself, and this behaviour really suggests that some bad thing has infected the system (have personally cleaned a few computers with quite similar symptoms). You'd be surprised at how much bad stuff gets transferred through USB / flash / external HDDs / floppies / ...

EDIT: Just throwing some theories.

DeMignon: ...and to be honest, there are also tons of problems with games on Mac ;-)
To be honest, I have no problems whatsoever playing games on a Mac. I'll be lucky if I live long enough to get through the backlog and new releases keep coming if selection is what you meant by that. If technical reasons is what you are talking about I'd have to guess you do not own one as there are no major problems. It's never been better for gaming on Macs actually than it is presently. :D

In any event, I would not try to persuade you to use something other than Windows if you are okay with that. To each their own.
