Tex Murphy has entered the building!

Tesla Effect: A Tex Murphy Adventure marks the triumphant return of everyone's favorite trenchcoat wearing, fedora bearing private detective, Tex Murphy! Thanks to the power of Kickstarter and legions of devoted fans, Tesla Effect: A Tex Murphy Adventure is available now--DRM-free on GOG.com--for $19.99! (We're so happy about this that some of us are squeeing like little girls!)

The year is 2050. The place: New San Francisco. Someone has made sure that our rough-around-the-edges hero has forgotten the events of the last seven years. What appears to be the world's worst hangover is just the beginning of Tex's troubles as he tries to recollect just what the hell happened. Stuck in a maze of unsolved murders and hidden agendas, Tex must solve the mystery of his own past and that of the lost technologies of Nikola Tesla. Can Tex regain his memory in time to restore what's been lost and stop a terrifying future?

If you have a hankering for old-fashioned FMV with a modern flavor, sleuthing while dropping some pithy one-liners, then look no further than Tesla Effect: A Tex Murphy Adventure available NOW on PC and Mac, DRM-free for $19.99 on GOG.com!

Important notice!
The Tex Murphy Video Contest is now CLOSED. We are drowning under a torrent of awesome entries and we will announce the winners soon!

runewarden: I pre-ordered and the game isn't there. It is available to purchase (again) - my pre-order things are there, but no game. Really disappointed. First pre-order I've ever done on gog.

sai: Hi try this link and check your GOG shelf again:
https://secure.gog.com/account/refresh

I wonder if the Tesla Effect installer changing from beta to retail created some archive issues, whatever the case this is what GOG staff are suggesting people do. Hope refreshing your account helps!
THANK YOU.

Caps definitely required! I'm just back from holiday and was desperately looking forward to this, and couldn't find that on my searches. It has worked, and I'll just start downloading!

Curious on the +1 DLC it states on my library, is there DLC already for Tex?

That's because you pre-orderd and got the soundtrack.

There won't be any actual DLC, as that was part of the original Kickstarter statement.

HypersomniacLive: This is actually not quite accurate. BFG guaranteed a non-Steam DRM-free option for anyone that wanted it in the early days of the Kickstarter campaign. This was reaffirmed in Update #61 (Oct 31, 2013) - and I won't even comment on the fact that "we’ll have more information on how to obtain a copy closer to the release of the game" never happened. All we asked for was for BFG to keep their word which they finally did, i.e. it there was nth to assume nor was it a matter of assuming anything to begin with.
Yes, that's basically what I said. They assumed Steam DRM free option was a good enough non-Steam option, because you don't need Steam at all after downloading. People screamed and told them it wasn't good enough. Now you're getting GOG codes. It taking two days is actually miraculously FAST for a company, not slow.

What else do you want them to do? Beg forgiveness?

Ichwillnichtmehr: They could have said: "Guys, please be patient, we are working on it.", or something like that, but they didn't.
See above.

This is what is written in the mentioned update:

"If you don’t want to go through STEAM, we’ll have more information on how to obtain a copy closer to the release of the game."

The only information they had for people who didn't want to go through Steam was:

"Our delivery method for Backer downloads is Steam."

They didn't ask the backers if that was "good enough", they didn't inform the backers about what they "assumed was good enough", they basically told them "It's good enough."

If they had communicated with the backers before release, all this could have been avoided.

BFG has no one to blame but themselves for this.

No, they said "we found an option that allows us to deliver through Steam but not require it. You can download and then remove Steam and not use it to play the game." I read the same emails, I know what they said.

You have to realize that "Steam must never touch my computer in any way" is a fringe concept that they likely didn't think about. They thought checking the DRM free box on Steam was good enough, because you wouldn't need Steam to play. You told them that wasn't good enough and now you're getting a GOG code.

I'm not saying they didn't mess up, they did. What I am saying is they made an honest mistake, corrected it, and don't deserve further scorn or anger. You're getting a GOG code, the game is great and true to the series, enjoy!

irondog: I'm disgusted with them. I don't know what I'll do with that GOG key yet if I see it - which I haven't - but I'll probably let it sit there and rust. I no longer have any desire to play the game whether it's the greatest thing since sliced bread or not, or to have any dealings with BFG again or, for that matter, with Kickstarter.
avatar
StingingVelvet: Oh my god man, the fucking drama here is killing me. They assumed DRM free on Steam would be enough. Super passionate anti-Steam people made it clear it wasn't enough. They said "okay" and sent out GOG keys to make you happy. Your response is to hate them, punch them in the wallet and not play the game at all?

Reexamine your fucking life priorities, man.
I agree. Most of these posts are technical related problems. Please go to Support with your complaints. Lets critique the actual GAME instead.

Perhaps this will make the situation clearer to you:

Backers during Kickstarter:

We don't use Steam, no matter how much you say it will be DRM-free. If you want our money, you will need to provide a DRM-free NON-Steam version of the game.

BFG during Kickstarter:

If that's what you want, than OK. If you give us your money, we will provide you with a DRM-free NON-Steam version of the game.

Backers during Kickstarter:

Thank you for understanding, here is our money.

Fast forward ~2 years

BFG after Kickstarter:

Hello backers, here is your DRM-free Steam version of the game.

Backers after Kickstarter:

Uh, that's nice, but we would rather have the DRM-free NON-Steam version of the game that you promised us during the Kickstarter. How about you send us the GOG.com codes that they send you, and you take back the Steam codes?

BFG after Kickstarter:

There are no plans to deliver GOG codes, our delivery method for Backer downloads is Steam.

Backers after Kickstarter:

What? You explicitly promised that there would be DRM-free NON-Steam version of the game for the people who don't use Steam.

~2 days of silence from BFG

Backers after Kickstarter:

Hello, would you please respond to us regarding this issue?

BFG after Kickstarter:

Sorry about that, you see, we had requested GOG codes for our Kickstarter backers early on. However, by the night the game was supposed to launch, we had not received them yet. It was a choice of whether we wanted to make the backers wait for the GOG codes, or simply send everyone a Steam code to access “Tesla Effect.” Since we wanted you guys to be able to play the game the first day it came out, we opted to send everyone the Steam code. However, the good news is by Thursday we received GOG codes.

Backers after Kickstarter:

.......OK, thanks for keeping your promise to the backers. And next time, please improve your communication with the backers.

Ichwillnichtmehr: Perhaps this will make the situation clearer to you:
I know the situation, thanks. I basically just said the same damn thing. The only thing I also said was: don't be so angry at them. My original reply was to someone who now refuses to play the game and actively wants to hurt Big Finish by giving away his keys. I never said BFG did nothing wrong, in fact I said they did do something wrong.

If you try to understand their perspective, and understand you got what you wanted, maybe you won't be so angry with them. That is my only point.

I am anrgy at BFG for their incompetence, but they did keep the promise to us backers in the end, and that is what most of us, including me, wanted.

The problem I have is with the "They assumed DRM-free on Steam would be enough.", even though they were explicitly told that it wasn't enough, they were explicitly told that they would not get out backing if no alterative was provided, and they explicitly promised that they would provide the people who backed them with that alternativ.

I get that. I am assuming they thought that unchecking the DRM box and allowing you to PLAY without Steam was what you wanted. I don't think they thought downloading through Steam (or installing it) was the issue. Steam is so massive in PC gaming now I think the idea some refuse to use it at all is something most developers wouldn't even think of.

I'm not saying they were right, I just think it was misunderstanding more than malice.

The idea that Steam is the only solution is a delusion, and anyone who thinks that way should be introduced to GOG right away.
Dear lord, all this arguing about Steam means people won't see any comments about the game you dolts! And this game deserves to be bought.

I just completed it and loved it. There's nothing about it that isn't Tex Murphy. You can tell they had a smaller budget in places (lots of reused objects in certain places, low resolution textures in others) but it didn't impact the fun I got out of the game. Like in every Tex game, near the end there's a huge base to explore with a ton of puzzles which leads to a fitting end. The Chelsee ending is really sweet too and finally brings an end to the 15 year old cliff hanger.

All in all, two thumbs up and here's hoping for another Tex game in the future!

That's not really what I was saying at all. My point was Steam is so dominant in sales, and so many games require it, that the idea of people never using it at all is probably foreign to many developers.

Wishes don't make reality.

Yeah I hear ya.

Sadly this game seems to be flying well under the radar. It's not on the Steam or GOG top sellers list at all, and most media sites seem to be ignoring it. Even the GOG threads about it are slow moving. I hope it's not as bad as it seems.

I quoted the following to the person who was so angry at BFG that he doesn't want to play the game anymore:

"Never ascribe to malice that which is adequately explained by incompetence."

- Napoleon Bonaparte

I just hope that next time(and I really hope there is a next time), they will act less incompetent.

The media sites that DO review it, have shit reviews too. "OMG the story is too complex! And the puzzles are too hard!" *facepalms*
