Good guy GOG

Gets backstabbed by indie developer.

Decides to make it up to customers despite not being at fault.
I don't see it on the front page now.

stoicsentry: Supposing I pre-ordered Botanicula from GOG (I didn't but suppose), thinking I get a discount. I then wait until it finally arrives, then on the very same day I find out that I could have gotten not only Botanicula but an entire bundle of games for the very same price. I go back to GOG and I'm like, "wtf GOG?"

In short, it rips off the customer and also drives a wedge between the customer and GOG.
Except this wasn't GOG's fault. They didn't know the game would be sold for much less somewhere else on the same day it was going to be released.

Blame the dev, NOT GOG.

bazilisek: a brutally competitive environment.
I think this is what makes people upset, when we think of Indie devs, we see them more like actual person rather than a faceless business. So it's a bit disillusioning, seeing such unfair play in the competition.
This is probably one of those situations where it's better to see what happens. We certainly can't stop the bundles from being sold, nor can we force an appology of the devs or of GOG. It's nice to know GOG has something planned, but still, this site probably didn't make a deal saying that this site would be the only distributor. It's odd that it wound up on a bundle yes, for a cost less than what it is on here. I call it bad business sense more than anything if they're going to undercut themselves this way.

Besides, I'd still rather get it on here even if I can get it cheaper in the bundle, I don't have patience enough to try and keep track of downloads across very many sites.

Look down and to the right.

When there's a lot of money at stake, everyone turns into a proper cunt. Everyone.

True, but it's not the main big picture that it was earlier.

imdwalrus: GOG's a business, that's all. There's no need to get personally outraged over this when it doesn't make any sense to.
GOG is a business that I have a stake in. Maybe not financially, but ideologically. They have also been nothing short of excellent in their dealings with me, going above and beyond what I would expect. I recognize that they are a business but I also recognize that there is nothing wrong with that and I like them on a personal level.

GOG never has been and never will be the sole distributor of Botanicula - Amanita is free to sell the game wherever and however they want.
Sure they are, but just because you are free to do it doesn't necessarily make it right. It's like reserving a seat on a plane or something and finding out you paid double for no good reason.
It was removed, good

now we're talking

Granted, but it's probably a minor remedy at best.
Well this is pretty reminiscent of when CD Projeckt decided to abandon their most loyal customers - people who bought Witcher 2 off GoG, and instead reward everyone else with a free copy of Witcher 2.

But hey, don't let the hypocrisy stop you guys from bitching about it :)

Agreed, but some people will not know any better. Some people will blame GOG when it is the dev that deserves the blame.

imdwalrus: Why?

If you think the game is worth $10, then you can still pay that much, to either GOG, straight to the developer, or to charity.

If you don't think it's worth that much, then you probably didn't preorder in the first place.

Where is the room to be mad? I'm not seeing it.

That attitude only works if the customer is an idiot.

Like I mentioned in the post, you can get the other games on HIB for almost nothing if you choose to do so. Yeah, you didn't get Machinarium from GOG, but is a DRM-free copy from HIB that comes with the soundtrack REALLY all that different?

The ONLY things you'd miss out on if you did that would be the above the average bonuses - which are items GOG doesn't offer in the first place anyway - and Steam keys, which GOG wouldn't give you and (given the almost violent hatred towards Valve) most of you guys wouldn't use anyway. And even then, GOG does give you a lot of goodies that the HIB version doesn't come with.

I can kind of see where the outrage of "I GOT RIPPED OFF" is coming from, but so far no one has been able to convince me it makes any sense.
Can't believe GOG.com was screwed by an indie developer. Way to burn your bridge Amanita.
