Telika: but maybe I'll try the I-war games. Aren't they a bit the "Nexus" of space dogfight, though ? I mean, about slow-paced capital ships clash ? Graphically, are their being modded to modern high-res, like Freelancer ?
Nah, combat is fast and furious, dodging and weaving in a cluster of missiles and plasma bolts, like any other space-sim. Sure, corvettes are bigger and a little more sluggish than a fighter. You can feel it especially in the first game, where you have a crew of 20, can go to different command decks seats like gunnery or engieneering, and set priorities for your repair techs. But it's still far from capital ship combats. When you take the pilot seat, the "dreadnought" is piloted pretty much like any space fighter, and has a very short survival time against a cruiser or even a destroyer. It's only when you get attacked by a pair of nimble C-fighters that you will feel sluggish.

And with it's minimal crew and cramped cockpit, the second games "feels" even more like an oversized fighter.

For graphics : I don't think so. I was totally enamored with these games when they were out, but their eye candy may have aged a bit.

Telika: So, for a gorgeous fast-ish-paced space battle fix, what are the current options ? Any classic in particular ? Any newly released underdog you adore ? Where do you people quench your thirst for colorful nebulae and swirling starships ?
While it's not exactly beautiful, Wing Commander 4 would be my recommendation, as long as you don't take the "Interactive Movie" aspect of it too seriously.

Telika: gorgeous
SpaceSim + fast paced = Descent
......................................................L____ Descent - Brainless + gorgeous = Freespace ?

You probably already played it but in my opinion Freespace 2 is better than Freelancer and not as 'tedious' as X3.

Psuja: Why was freespace 2 mentioned only once?

If you think the visuals are bad by todays standard, you havent tried FSopen. Which looks amazing, when configured properly.
That, in short ^

iippo: Free roaming is not some instant win in my opinion.
I-War 2 is very good game and i liked it, but didnt really care for the sandbox part of it as its precisely that - shallow sandbox. Beatiful scenery, but other than thats you just grind the transporters never mind the system you are in.

Meanwhile, I-War 1 told way more interesting stody (in my opinion) with so good and surprising missions twists the they have not been since.

Did you know that the mission could be succesful, even when you didnt complete it anywhere near 100%? The debriefings would vary greatly depending on what you did or did not do - and oh my got that stuff was creative.

Its ofcourse just my opinion, but i do like to take good story and creative, surprising missions over your regular sandbox game any day of the week. Also while equiping your ship is fun - its just one part of the game, not something that "makes the game by itself".

Would mind if I-War 3 came along...
I found the sandbox rather good even though there was little to do outside pirating, I have yet to see a game where in I can stalk a freighter convoy and ambush them in deepspace.
The story of I-War 1, although well told, I found rather predictable to be honest, though I admit that it was better than the cut short story of I-War 2.

By the way, I found Star Wolves surprisingly good and I was admittedly addicted to it to see it through the end.

Yeah, but I can't take loot and I find subs to be rather claustrofobic. =P

There are now few space games where several people can man one ship - i wonder when we'll get do the same with Subs.. (Hoping to get Subwars on daily random deal).

Almost on topic: those looking for arcade space sims might want to give shot to Aquanox games. I liked the original Archimedian Dynasty awful lot. That game should appear here as well.
