That would be funny if I ever had a housekeeper IRL. :P So I had one in The Sims and I had an affair with her and thus had to fire her....that was a game people!
Ah the sims. In the original there were these two attractive (in a polygonal way) female roommates that I wanted my character to date. So, I started the game with the the two roommates, bought an empty lot, gave them a telephone and a table to place it on and quit. That way I could call them to arrange a date. I imagine the one roommate was excited to eventually move out of the grass and into a real house.

Seriously, the AI back then sucked. Why would someone stop leaving on the grass?

Also, where was the electricity for the phone coming from?
Alpha centauri and the total war series are some of the best though i love to play fallen enchantress : legendary heroes when i can and galactic civilizations 2 and master of orion 1 and 2 scratch the space itch.

If your just starting out i suggest the civilization series and going from there and if you can get some of the bundled ones you wont waste munch if you don't like it.
I did a GoG Mix where I picked some interesting looking turn-based games:
Truly original turn-based! NO rpg or warfare boredom!

My Picks:
Chaos Overlords
Braveland
Costume Quest
Hotline Miami
Sword of the Stars: The Pit Gold Edition
DROD 1 + 2 + 3
Worms United
Worms 2
Worms Forts: Under Siege
Moonbase Commander
Combat Chess
Battle Chess Special Edition
Shadowrun Returns
DLC: Shadowrun: Dragonfall
Zafehouse: Diaries
King of Dragon Pass

BTW, there's a bit of middle ground between turn-based and real-time games. Nobody would call Leisure Suit Larry a turn-based game, but it isn't real time either. The same goes with management games, or other game where you can control the time, such as XCOM, Uplink or FTL.

Yeah, no kidding. Even Jagged Alliance 2 is real-time strategy (the map screen) mixed with turn-based tactics (the tactical screen, during combat). Outside combat, the game is completely real-time. I haven't played the first game but I assume it's the same.

Another game that mixes real-time and turn-based gameplay is the Ogre Battle series (real-time strategy with semi-turn-based combat). Ogre Battle 64 is btw probably one of the best strategy games ever, if not THE best.

Eh?

Yeah it is (or at least very similar). Only Deadly Games is completely turn based, IIRC (which is probably due to the simplified gameplay structure and focus on the combat).

KasperHviid: Hotline Miami
That's actually just an action game (and one that requires ridiculously quick reflexes at that), nothing turn based about it.

What was the reason that you excluded the HOMM games? And Hotline Miami? That game is so fast I can't get anywhere on it...

Actually, reflexes are nothing compared to the psychosis level required! ;)

Needless to say it's one of my faves!

Oh and OT, it just started snowing here.

And I finally got Red Dead Redemption yesterday. Man, going OT rocks!

you might also want to check Gorky 17 (aka Odi:Um) - its right here on gog, and whislt buggy as hell, mixes the feeling of the psx era resident evil games with turn based combat.
ive quite enjoyed it - its hard as hell and you'll be saving all the time, but if the idea behind the story and atmosphere grabs you, then it would be a worthy purchase as a sale bargain at the least.
