I do not own The Witcher 2, due to the fact that long ago about 15 hours into my Steam copy of The Witcher my save file got corrupted and try as I might could not be recovered.

Today I read about how TW2: Enhanced Edition was being offered as a free DLC, and once more I marveled at CD Projekt's ability to buck the depressing trend of modern gaming studios.

Once more I had to stand up and say 'well done, you make me feel like a valued customer.'

And just like the best way to send messages to companies that display poor form (Ubisoft) is by not buying their software, I felt a profound need to whip out my wallet to signal my approval.

So I have purchased my second copy of The Witcher, with every intent to reinvest the time lost on my original game. Upon completion of the original I will buy TW 2, at full price, gladly.
if you truly wanted to vote with your wallet you should buy The Witcher 2 EE now since it'll only go down in price from now...

but congratulations for realising that voting with your wallet works both ways. most gamers seem to practice this kind of voting in one way only: they pay less for what they perceive to be less quality or less service. never mind the fact that they also pay less for good games and good service because they pick up everything during sales.
so in the end, most gamers don't vote with their wallet at all.
I vote with my wallet but still avoid full price whereever possible. It's a hybrid approach. Buying mostly on GOG during sales gives me the highest number of games while still voting with my wallet for GOG. I might not vote as much as others, but I am voting clearly and anyway save more money to spend on other useful things.

So, in a world where all people would be like me, GOG will only survive if they stay competitive - but if they do they'll get a lot of support.

The only people I vote for with my wallet are my family.

Actually, they do. Every purchase made is a vote with the wallet, whether it be at full price, preorders, discounted, or with incentives/extras.

Nevermind, confusing Witcher 2 with Witcher 1. From googling it seems both 1 and 2 have some small corruption risks. It's always best to keep several different save slots, just in case.

And never let your HD get 'full' where the savefiles are stored.

I'm always saying that I don't pay what I have to pay, but what I want to pay. Games that I really like, I buy at full price (Deus Ex, Mass Effect, Anno) games that I think are good, but not that good I buy on a deal. Games I really, really like I buy multiple times (Grimrock, TW 1, Mass Effect 1), especially if I "accidentally" only bought the game as a cheap sale. Oh, and I spent insane amounts on certain Kickstarters (actually, not that insane, but more than full price).

I also buy most of my GOGs full price when they are released because I like GOG and I want to show them that releasing Anachronox is the way to go. I go for GOG sales only on games that I wouldn't really buy otherwise and that go to my backlog for "that special time2 I really have an strange urge for that game.

I acknowledge that this mentality is only possible because of two things. First, after a long and painful time as a students, I finally have the disposable income to do so. And, maybe even more important, I was and I somehow still consider myself a pirate (even thought I don't actually pirate anymore). Therefore, for me, everything is available for free anyway on the internet and purchasing games is my way of being part of the "great machine" of gaming.

I wouldn't be too fast to blame the Witcher devs for a save corruption with Steam (*spits in Steams general direction), It buggered up 90 hours of play for me with Dead Island.

Glad you are back on track and hope you enjoy W1, I'm currently re-playing it at the moment and on a second playthrough its interesting what you notice, that you hadn't noticed before. Great game series!

I didn't blame anybody, I simply wasn't keen to have to start over from scratch..

Which is then meaningless as most publishers only concern themselves with the first few months of sale at most.

To put it another way, Trilarion, you're saying "this game isn't worth full price". That's how you're voting. So where's the incentive for the publisher to make games like that?

It's obvious you don't like Steam but Googlefu shows nothing steam specific about the issue. And you're blaming Steam for Dead Island save corruption? How do you even know that it was Steam causing it? Every copy uses Steam. The auto save corruption thing is well documented and was related to Dead Islands online infrastructure when it attempts to join two or more players with the Join feature. Unless you know of any particular corruption problems related to the Steam client you just seem to be spitting in it's general direction because you want to.
Oops, misunderstood the post. my bad.

Good luck with that.

I've voted with my wallet for my entire life and yet, consoles are still vibrant as are games that come out of the gate retailing well over 30$ and staying at that price for months.

You'll have better luck preaching to people that things you don't like to buy are evil.

Then, you might actually convince someone else and double your impact.

Yeah sorry, I'll float my boat with stuff I can actually back up. Only info out there about corrupt saves due to cloud synch is people using Dead Island save game editor.

But I'm sure you're 100% sure it was cloud synch ;)
