Fumarole: Any business that doesn't track where its revenue comes from isn't likely to remain in business for long.
I never said they won't look at it. They'll certainly be looking at discounts. A lot of publishers do that. Some find that simply deducting 10% is more than enough to dramatically increase sales. That's the kind of thing they'll be looking at.

But is that going to tell them anything about specific games and make them reassess the verdicts they've already reached on those titles? No. Of course not.

What they'll be looking at is the vast majority of sales. The sales that were at full price. The ones that made the real money.

Navagon: ...If they bothered to figure out where that money was coming from and analyse what this revenue indicated then they'd be spending most of that money on the sheer bureaucracy of it all.
I think you exagerate the situation a bit. But actually I would be satisfied if "older games" like one or two year old come DRM free and cheap to shops that I like. All this wouldn't exist if there wouldn't be people like me.
I would recommend the game Rayman Origins by ubisoft, as it comes without any form of DRM. Buying this game will also send a message. And besides, it's awesome ;D

According to Amazon and Gamersgate the game comes with Tages. I believe someone mentioned that the German retail edition comes DRM-free.

Now that GOG has convinced so many publishers we might see more in the way of older games going DRM-free in future.

Navagon: Yeah, I suppose that if the revenue spiked the moment the price started to drop then there would be reason for them to pay attention to that. But I wouldn't bank on it. They're so honed in on the sales of the first few months that even day one sales can be seen as make or break. They really don't give a toss 6 months down the line, and when you're faced with that kind of attitude then there's no reason to assume that buying a game at a cheaper price tells the publisher anything at all.
It most certainly does tell them something; whether they choose to listen is an entirely different matter, and frankly that's their problem. Ultimately the developers and publishers that do listen to what people are saying with their money will be able to get more of that money, while those who don't listen will continue in a downward spiral. In other words, it will work exactly how voting with your dollars should work.

And GOG has convinced them by returning lots of money. Money that came because I voted with my wallet. Not as much as others vote but still it has some effect.

It's just too bad then that 'mainstream' gaming is populated by a ridiculous amount of dumb sheep. Enter Call of Doodie/Modern Warfarce. It's beyond ludicrous how much money that franchise has been pulling, which then happens to rub off its complete non-innovation/multi grindfest on some other games. *le sigh*

People who like such games simply value things differently from you or I- as long as they feel they're getting a good deal for their money and are happy with their purchases there's not really anything to criticize there. Likewise, there's not much to criticize in companies recognizing what their target demographic wants and providing it (and making a ton of money in the process). Save the criticisms for people who buy games against their better judgment (and the warnings of others) then complaining they got ripped off, or companies who make games their target demographic doesn't care for or include things that reduce the perceived value of their games then complain that they aren't making as much money as they thought they would.
