Actually - that is somewhat of a wide spread misconception. Traditionally Haiku's had a five "morae", i.e. stresses, then seven, then five structure. Most modern haiku - as is the case with modern poetry in general - is far less formally structured. The important thing with haikus is that, content wise, they juxtapose two images; and if done well those have a surprising, but logical, connection.
