Don't worry about my silly self. It's just curious how many repeat threads we do get in here after some time without people noticing. *shrug* Shit happens. ;)
Maybe this'll give me a chance to revise my list a bit... if that's at all possible. Let's see. Can't think of any console game that'd be deserving of a place here, and funnily enough all the games in my list happen to be available on GOG these days. *shrug* In no particular order:
Descent
- Yup. The very first one. Three's quite enjoyable even if it's not quite up to par with the first two, and the second part, while featuring some definite improvements, has some things I do not like, i.e. forever robot respawn stations (ugh!) and some ridiculously hard boss fights. The first one is definitely the crudest, but still the most fun for me to play. It's one of those very rare action/shooter games I can replay without tiring of it.
Wing Commander: Privateer
- It is what I consider to be the best (read most fun) Elite-style game, also doubling as my favorite WC game - the regular WC games are enjoyable enough with all their story bits and exposition, but to me they aren't nearly as fun as Privateer's go-and-make-your-own-scifi adventure.
Master of Orion
- My favorite 4X. I must admit it's a pretty close shave with its sequel and Alpha Centauri, both of which are still excellent, yet either of those two can get pretty drawn out towards the end and get bogged down in micromanagement. MoO's simplicity in design helps it to get past both of those points, for the most part.
RollerCoaster Tycoon
- While its sequels may be considered bigger and better, once again I consider the original the best since it doesn't get bogged down in extra features and some rather unnecessary changes done in the latter two. That said, both 2&3 still stand as great games on their own, but there is just something about the first I appreciate more. *shrug* That's also without nostalgia talking, as I've never actually had the pleasure of playing the first two until they were released on GOG.
King of Dragon Pass
- Another title I had never played until its appearance on GOG. It definitely shows its age, but this is one game that seems to have aged very gracefully despite that fact. Very unique in what it does and has never really been duplicated (probably because it was relatively obscure even at the time of its release). It's one of the best examples why I buy games here. ;)
Honorable mentions:
Heroes of Might & Magic 3, X-Wing Alliance, Tomb Raider Anniversary, Worms
It's a bit curious that my top list consists of all '90s titles. Is there really something that has changed so drastically in the years after? I wouldn't think so, since there are definitely plenty of newer(er) games that I've enjoyed aplenty, but it's a rarity for me to give any of them a consideration for top game. Hm. Then again, there were plenty of other '90s games I really enjoyed and still enjoy, but still wouldn't make my top list for various reasons.
