I think they'd take offense, because they are selling the books so if I release code that integrates data from the books, they might feel that it reduces the need for people to buy the books as the data (or part of it) can be obtained elsewhere for free.

Well that does seem a bit silly to take offense over that, but I suppose I can understand the concern it could be to creators of something having the interest in their product possibly decreased.
