grimgroove: Is there anyone else out there who actually spends more time looking at game descriptions + reviews and subsequently buying instead of actually playing what has been bought?

I'm currnetly stitting with morethan 100 games in my e-shelf and I think I haven't even played ten percent of them :D

I'm beginning to love GOG more than I love the GoG's themselves :-o
You have to think about what really gives you pleasure. If it is building up a game collection that shopping is more important than playing. If you want both then better not spend too much time buying games now you know you won't play soon. It's a waste of time and money. Better use your time then to play the games.

I'm in a weird phase where I enjoy metagaming more than actual gaming. That includes buying. For example, during the Autumn Insomnia promo I bought Ultima Underworld because it was dirt cheap, and because I was intrigued by its descriptions. I spent the next couple of games researching the game, weighing the available classes and skills, absorbing various tips and strategies, hyping myself up to the game.

Then I started playing and it was just meh. Don't get me wrong; it's a great and groundbreaking game in its own right, but the controls are too clunky, and it's a bit too dungeony for my tastes. I like more outdoor environments. So I actually played it for a grand total of three hours. But I plan to return to it...someday.
i do sometimes i just impulse buy then end up not liking the game although i am trying to save money so wont be buying nothing anytime soon.

I'm in the same boat my friend. Don't forget about the amount of time you spend int he forums as opposed to playing as well. I also have a problem of going mod-crazy, to the point that I play games even less because I fuss around with trying to find the perfect mods and mod-combinations, and reading about cool changes to my favorite games.

fronzelneekburm: I may already have (d)evolved to the next stage: caring more about the lack of new releases than about what is already on the site.
This has begun to bite me too after this past winter sale and the ::gasp:: few weeks without new and classic releases. I pretty much own everything that I want from here already.

Does anyone else have the problem that once they've downloaded their GOG games they spend too much time going through the bonus content?

I play every RPG I buy for a good while and get my money out of them.

Shooters it's about 50/50. I have a large backlog and get lazy about it, especially if they're linear.

Every other genre I have a HORRIBLE play rate. I barely ever touch them, honestly.

grape1829: With all these crazy sales and bundles, it's kinda hard not to hoard stuff. Worse if you've been following "the scene" for more than a year.

From my GOG shelf, I've only played Witcher 1 and Heroes 3 for more than 10 hours after purchasing.
From Steam, I've got something like 380 games that I've either not played or played less than 1 hour. I think there are like 5 games I've played more than 10 hours.
Then there are all those random games from random stores and DRM-Free games from bundles that I don't even remember.

I'm thinking I've got like 500~600 games in total that I've either not played or played less than 1 hour, and probably 10 or so games I've played more than 10 hours. Crazy.
Amazingly i think you we have very similar numbers and experiences lol
I have 200 games here and I have probably played 10-15 of them. Only 3 more than 10 hours over the last year: Baldur's Gate, System Shock 2, Planescape: Torment.
2 on Steam, Civ4 and Wasteland 2

That was better than 2010-2012 where only Civ4 had my attention.

I'm not proud but I share some of this same fetish..

I love to collect my games PDF manuals and walkthroughs, reading them.. Browsing their reviews.. Reading players comments..

Hell, when I go bake a cake i carry on my Vita to check the Ps Store and read some more reviews and comments, forums about my purchased games..

Damn.. Doomed.. Lol.. I actually play most of my games but I can't shake that crazy habit, I think it is a residue of my nostlagia for boxed games and paper magazines..
Steamgifts mostly cured me of my game-buying. I still can't help buying stupid good sales, but for the most part, "shopping" on steamgifts keeps me from buying in a real life.

That also worked for me to an extent, but for a different reason. Getting on Steam Gifts doubled the money I spent on games, because I was buying to give. That made me realise I'm spending a lot of money without playing games, and I decided to cut down both spending and gifting. (I also cut down entering giveaways because I feel uncomfortable not playing what I win; I still occasionally enter here on the forum though.)
