shadearg: Amnesia: The Dark Descent

I love Penumbra: Overture and Penumbra: Black Plague, and have bought them each three times to support Frictional Games. I believe that those two are both masterpieces in their own right.

To give an idea of my regard for Amnesia, know that I purposely waited until release day to pay the full $20 to support Frictional. It was released on a Wednesday, and I didn't touch it until midnight of that Friday. I played it properly; with headphones, in the dark.. What a disappointment.

JambroceBC: How so?
Were you expecting to not be scared shitless?
Like I stated, I'm a pretty big fan of the previous two Penumbra games. I found both to be scarier than Amnesia by at least an order magnitude. I was hoping to be scared shitless, or at the very least somewhat affected.

I found the horror gimmicks of Amnesia to be way overdone and full of almost entirely half-baked clichés. I was so unimpressed by the lack of imagination and implementation of the torture devices alone that I stood inside the iron maiden and slammed the door shut on myself repeatedly. I don't think that's supposed to be the intended reaction for that moment.

Fallout 3
THE FUC*ING SIMS!
SIM CITY!!
SPORE!!!

Will Wright can suck it! I absolutely despise this man and his "games" To me, he is the shitstain on the PC gaming industry! And I believe he is single-handedly responsible for every watered-down, mass-market friendly game that hardcore PC gamers have had to put up with since 1999.
Why don't we see games like Planescape Torment anymore?? Why will we NEVER see another game like it as long as any of us live??? Because in December of 1999, Planescape Torment sold a few thousand copies to people like you and me who appreciate what a masterwork of art that game is. 3 months later, the Sims sells a copy to every grandmother and other non-gamer who owned a computer.

It was all the proof that was needed to show publishers that the best way to make a dollar in the industry was to make games that appeal to the 99 percent of computer owners whose reason for owning the machine had nothing to do with playing games.....to hell with the other 99 percent (ie: those of us who bought Torment on it's release date).

GoJays2025: Final Fantasy VII

The dialogue seems to be written by children, especially when compared to the western RPGs I'm used to, like any one of BioWare's. I didn't find the gameplay to be too outstanding either. I mean, it's definitely not a bad game, but I don't get all this 'BEST RPG EVER!' hype around it.
Final Fantasy VII was a big deal when it was released, and I DO understand why it is so revered by gamers today.
At the time, RPG's like Final Fantasy just weren't released in the west. There were a few people who loved them, but most people just didn't "get" them. I mean, a game where you fight by selecting an option from a menu???-what's fun about that??
FF VII was a game that looked so much cooler than anything at the time, that everyone wanted to see it in action. It sold a lot of copies to people who had never played a game like it. Then, when they played it, they realized that the game was as engrossing as any novel or movie could be. Even if it wasn't the greatest game ever made, it was the first time many gamers felt a real attachment to some characters in a fantasy world. It's a bit of a life changer for a lot of people.

Call of Duty (series)
The Sims (series)
Bioshock
Mr. Robot and Beneath a Steel Sky come to mind. Neverwinter Nights as well, although as I recall most people agree that the singleplayer campaign is just bad, so it might not count.
Anything that revolves around loot. I fucking hate loot and games that are built to take advantage of poor suckers who crave it. Borderlands and ever Diablo clone ever are good examples. God I fucking hated Borderlands.

MMOs... designed to fuck with you, get you addicted, make you act irresponsible, and most of them are not even fun. Fuck MMOs.

Not much else I hate really. Some big games aren't my thing, but I don't hate them. Maybe point and click adventure games with really stupid puzzles, like Full Throttle.
Strategy games you cant succeed in without a kung fu masters reflexes and a fighter pilots ability to do twenty things at the same time.

What the hell does these traits have to do with something that should have smarts as the most important ability?

Take your pick among the most popular RTS games available for examples.
Any & every turn-based game. I remember buying Lost Oddysey a few years back after some rave reviews. Got home and excitedly ripped open and popped the game in. Music was amazing, graphics were amazing (well for a console) and then I hit the first batlle.... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! Why didn't I realizr this was turn-based. Pressed eject, and back to the store to trade in.

I know so many folks who love them, but it just kills game play for me.

Oh and anything where I have to constantly access a gazillion menus to upgrade etc.

And while I am on a roll, Assassins Creed and Fable II
Fallout 3 - pretty to look at from a world detail stand point but as a rpg it's shallow as hell, plus the "story" if it can be called that seems to have been cut and pasted together with pieces from Fallout 1-tactics.

Final Fantasy 8,10,10-2,13,13-2 - horrible, horrible excuses for RPGs plus the stories are god awful and really silly, plus the characters are annoying and unlikable.

Metal Gear Solid 2,3,4 - I admit I liked MGS it wasn't a great stealth game by any stretch of the imagination but it was a good game overall, but then the sequels came and they just seemed to have been taking story writing classes from the guys behind Final Fantasy 8 on becuase man they just got really, really silly.

Minecraft - it's fun.. for about 2 hours

Donkey Kong Country 64 - "hey let's take Super Mario 64 and strip out everything that made it so cool and fun and just keep the pointless collecting!"

Elder Scrolls Oblivion and Skyrim
The Tower Defence genre in general.

I've played a couple of tower defence games (not just browser ones but retail too) and I really don't see the appeal. I like strategy games but normally these tower defence games are so rigid in their design. It's always about improving turrets and improving something and then waiting for the horde to come knocking. Blah.

Another game I don't like is Tetris, I just don't find it at all addictive. The same goes for Angry Birds. Played it once for five minutes and I've never looked back.

Oh, just remembered! Amanita Design's point and click hypoplasia. It's a pain to see what the point and click genre has regressed to.
I don't like Assassins Creed series. I played it and was amazed that so many people loves it so much. There is nothing to love there. Boring, simple, simple, boring...and boring and simple again.

But that is only my own opinion. I know that different people like different games and that is fine with me.
Hate is a strong word but I dislike Final Fantasy 12.
I never beat it due to boredom. The npc's were boring and felt not alive at all, the story was uninteresting and the characters felt empty. Not to mention the lack of sidequests or minigames. And by that I mean non-battle side quests. Reason I didn't buy a ps3 and went with FF 13. Apparantly to many I made the right decission. Everything went downhill after X-2.
released : Skyrim
upcoming : Max Payne 3

Hating a game you haven't played is the definition of insanity.
