Pica-Ludica: Reading this discussion made me think about what kind of game I would classify as a JRPG, and I must admit that I've failed to come up with a better criterion than artistic direction. Namely: if an RPG is in anime style, it's a JRPG.
This isn't by any far stretch of the imagination an authoritative source to get an answer from, but it includes some information and external reference links also: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JRPG

I've never really looked into it before but I've always thought of Japanese RPGs as those which have obvious Japanese styles of artwork in them whether they are anime or other art styles typical of Japanese artistry, but also gameplay elements and dialogue content traditional of RPGs from Japan. The Final Fantasy series being a prime example. I'm no expert though by any longshot. :)

Pica-Ludica: * Ôkami [Zelda-like by Clover/Capcom; okay, I'm stretching the whole "RPG" thing here, but Okami does have RPG elements, and it deserves to be mentioned and above all played because it's a masterpiece; it's basically a Zelda game, but set in mythical feudal Japan, with gorgeous stylized 2D graphics and a terrific and a traditional Japanese soundtrack; you play as the Sun Goddess Amaterasu incarnated into a white wolf, and you learn Sumi-e inspired brush techniques to fight with and to repair/change the world with; if you love Japanese culture, you will adore this game]
While undoubtedly gorgeous looking, the game is definitely 3D (in the way that term mainly used to be applied to games, it's 2D in the sense it's not stereoscopic).

Gah, thanks for correcting me on that, you're absolutely right! ^^; I guess I was a bit tired from gushing out all that text, and mixed my terms up. Perhaps it was a freudian slip, since I prefer 2D graphics and Ôkami does look and feel like a living, breathing Japanese painting? :)
Cheers!
Well, GamersGate had The Last Remnant for $2.50, so I picked it up. Incidentally, they were out of steam keys, but the shortage lasted less than one day. Also, my power cord and composite cables for the mystery PS2 should be arriving, so hopefully I will be able to delve into the world of good old console gaming.

/tiphat to this community for all your suggestions; I hope they will keep being added to this thread.
