Darvond: Trouble is, it seems that even first and second party studios are having trouble coming up with good uses for it, such as the infamous horn button for MK8 and I hear that DKRTF didn't exactly put it to good use either.
Hah hah, so you hit the touch surface to honk? That actually sounds funny, but no doubt was primarily added as a feature for younger gamers.

But yeah, that's pretty sad, if even Nintendo can't come up with a good use for their own hardware gimmicks. On the bright side, there are apparently games which make good use of it. I hear that Deus Ex: HR does it really well, to the point that it's basically the best and most interesting console version of the game. And I still have some hope for the Wii U version of Watchdogs, but I don't know how exactly they'll use the touch controller in the game. ( Talk about wasted potential, if they don't... )
The Wii U isn't dead, it's just pining for the fjords.

Square Enix are working on bringing Wii U-equivalent second screen functionality to the Windows and Xbox 360 versions as well.

CharlesGrey: Oh, I've actually played the first Metroid Prime, even though the developer name did not ring a bell with me. I thought it was by a different studio... Anyhow, that's the kind of game the new Wii could use more of. Well crafted, unique, and catering to an older audience than most of the first party releases so far.

I'd say mostly they just need more games to really take advantage of the Wii U's unique controller and features, so it doesn't just feel like a tacked on gimmick. I remember many of the original Nintendo DS games felt like that too. And the same could be said about motion controls. That doesn't mean the feature itself is bad, but not many game developers manage to take advantage of it in meaningful and creative ways. So often it feels like the game would have worked just as well without it.
At the NeoGAF forums, someone posted what I consider to be a good idea for the Wii-U: Make a new Pokemon Snap game, where you use the Game Pad as a camera to capture pictures of Pokemon. That would have been nearly perfect for demonstrating the device, especially as a launch title. Unfortunately, the hypothetical Pokemon Snap Safari was never enacted in real life.

Darvond: Rare is still around. They're known as Retro Studios. Its just that Nintendo had them make run and jump 2D platformers instead of letting them recapture the magic that made the studio what it was.

And they brought back Pilotwings, for the incredibly lacking Pilotwings Resort. :V
Uhhh... Retro isn't Rare. Journalists and people have been referring to them as the 'new Rare' because they're Nintendo's best second party developer and have been trusted now with the DK franchise, but they really don't have anything to do with Rare at all.

Don't they have staff from what was the old Rare?

PINING for the FJORDS? What kind of talk is that? Look, why did it fall flat on it's back the moment I got it home?

Pining for the fjords?! It's passed on! Bereft of life it rests in peace, this, mate, is a dead console.

Edit: Didn't see Liftrasil's post, oh well.

Well, for starters, Rare is a British company, while Retro is American. That alone generally limits the crossover somewhat.

That doesn't necessarily mean there aren't any former Rare employees at Retro, but there won't be very many.
Nintendo is on their way out.
This man, is my hero for the day.

There might be someone amongst them (not that I've heard of); not enough to draw any link between them though... they weren't founded by ex-Rare devs or anything.

Like Pidgeot says, Rare was based in Twycross, Leicestershire and Retro is based in Austin, Texas I think. That's not to say that there aren't necessarily any ex-Rare devs at Retro, but it doesn't mean anything. They're not a successor studio like Clover -> Platinum or anything.
I think it's going to take some time for the Wii-U to build up just as it took plenty of time for the PS3 to build up.

It's too early to say that the Wii-U is dying.
It's sad to see people trash the Wii-u for not having games, when ps4/xbone have got nothing and probably won't be remotely worthwhile until holiday 2015.

hell, the vita probably is still a better buy than either of those consoles at this point (although with a more directed/niche lineup and ports out the ass).
