Thank you for the great giveaway! I'm happy to participate, either for The Mansion or for Shadow Man! Very different genres, but both sound like interesting games.

I am not primarily interested in being scared in games - I am usually more looking for a sense of wonder or moments of insight or discoveries.

However, I tend to be ok with being scared and even enjoy it in situations where it feels earned - when my character has actively sought out danger or the unknown, and I am invested in that exploration. In contrast, I don't like tacked-on or repetitive scares where they do not feel appropriate to the situation, e.g. I would not enjoy jump scares as a regular feature of a monster type in a shooter game.

Thanks for giveaway. i am in for both games.

Horror game wise - always enjoyed a survival horror - like RE or more recently Green Hell.

Dead Space 1 has a special place for me -- just for the audio/soundtrack,
great giveaway

i can't really nail it down, why i love some scary games. its like the same as watching horror movies, but more intense. i remember the fear while running around that mansion (residen evil on psx) infested with zombies and other stuff. short on ammo, while all the things are lurcking around you ... man, what a game!

but on the other hand there some scary games, at which i couldn't progress because i find them just too scary. in alien isolation (which is a masterpiece), i just end up hiding in a locker and watching the damn alien walk by.
Thank you for another great giveaway :) I'd like to be in for The Mansion. Edit: I am not in for Shadow Man classic.

I do like to be scared by games. I don't know exactly why, but I guess I find the tension and mystery to be exciting. Scary games also tend to deliver on atmosphere and good sound design. My favorite horror game is Project Zero (aka Fatal Frame in the states). I bought it for my original Xbox collection a few years ago, and I constantly had chills and a sense of dread while playing it. And I loved it. I had never experienced such haunting atmosphere before, and it didn't even rely on jumpscares to spook me. I have the old Silent Hills too, and they come pretty close, but PZ is still where it's at for me.

Here is a gameplay video from Project Zero.

greyhat: Sorry, I forgot to mention. Yes, I am opting out of the Shadowman draw. I actually have it already. Excellent game.
K, noted....and thanks for letting me know.

ywzywz: i am fun of horror games but actually only game i finished in one try is SOMA. I dont know. it is hard to play with all that stress level but i always open games hardest mode. And i still stuck most of them :D
By stuck do you mean you stuck to them and finished them(or tried to)? If so, good for you. :)

avatar
ywzywz: Hello there.

Thanks for giveaway. i am in for both games.
Yer name is entered...good luck to ya.

bluethief: GamezRanker, although I'm not in, I decided to update my previous post with my thoughts and feelings on horror games.
I read it.....thanks for the updated stuff in yer post...was nice to read.

Btw, if you like games like that with recording cameras and also like adventures/point and clicks, you might want to try Lost Crown(sadly afaik it's not on GOG, though). :)

-Nachtmahr-: I like horror games because of the dark atmosphere. Maybe because I am more of a goth/metalhead who grew up with nothing but horror movies. So I don't get scared by them but find them relaxing. My fondest memories always include Silent Hill and how nobody ever topped this series in terms of themes and atmosphere! Back when psychological horror actually implemented psychological themes, not just bursting light bulbs and jumpscares.
Yeah, I like exploring a number of such games as well.....also Silent Hill is a nice series(of what I played)....ditto for Fatal Frame(I mainly played a large chunk of the second game, and it was tense but nice).

avatar
-Nachtmahr-: May I enter for Shadow Man? I already own The Mansion.
Yes, you may.....and as with the others: thanks for adding to this contest/thread of mine...and best of luck to ya.

bhrigu: I sometimes get scared by playing horror games though, so horror games are usually not my cup of tea; especially the ones where the player character is mostly helpless. Though I have a few fond memories of playing horror games. Playing Downfall was a memorable experience. Clive Barker's Undying was also a great game. And I do hope that someday the Obscure series will be available on GOG.
Undying is a favorite of mine(shame they never made the rest of it...the sequels I mean), and Obscure is good as well(the bit I played).

bhrigu: Not In!

Kudos for conducting the GA though.
:)
And thanks for joining us :)

aCyborg: But to answer the question do I like being scared by games?

No not really, I haven't really played any real horror games and with Subnautica on my first save file I never got far because fear of the big fish in other areas.
That's sad to hear....hopefully maybe youll some day overcome all that. If not(and borrowing from what you said), there's still plenty of gaming fish in the sea, as it were. :)

51nikopol: To answer the question, I am not a big horror fan. What I enjoy in games is solving puzzles and the feeling of accomplishment when I do. Before I knew about walkthroughs it might take a long time to complete a puzzle but the feeling of getting it right was part of the fun.
I sometimes look into walkthroughs/etc when really stumped, but I also like the feeling of beating something on my own.

avatar
51nikopol: This is one of the things I love about this community, learning about games I was not aware of.

I would like to enter for a chance to win The Mansion. It looks very interesting.

Thanks for the giveaway GamezRanker and good luck to all.
That it does.....so now ye be entered. Here's hoping the fates/gods of luck/etc shine upon ye. :)

Btw as per Rule 5: Are ye opting out of the draw for shadow man?

I hear ya on wonder at discoveries. :)

Also I myself like some jump scares(partly an "adrenaline junkie"), but yeah....I can see/respect why some might dislike em.

Adam_Tatton-Reid: Horror game wise - always enjoyed a survival horror - like RE or more recently Green Hell.

Dead Space 1 has a special place for me -- just for the audio/soundtrack,
RE(classic or new, of what I played) is usually nice/decent, and I love DS1.

Adam_Tatton-Reid: Thanks for giveaway. i am in for both games.
As mentioned in the rules, I will be screening some entries. You have 1 rep and also only 5 games, and your library is hidden....so before I can enter you, i'd need to check your library(to make sure they're not, say, all free games) to be certain you're not an alt/etc trying to enter.

So if you want to enter and are ok with such terms: please set library view to friends only and add me as friend, or set your library temporarily to public so/until I can view it...or even take a screenshot of your library(with your username in the bar at the top of the screen in the pic) and link that to me via PM.

I have/had the same feeling being chased by the one enemy in the police station in the new RE2 remake(and also the bits of classic RE3 that I played)....tense yet fun times. :)

That reminds me of how I felt in Clock Tower 3 and other games.

Also, thanks for reminding me that that game is on my backlog.....gotta play it some day(i'm a bit of an aliens fan ;D).

Well yer in for the rep prize at least....maybe you'll be able to gain a positive bit of rep for once, eh?

Oddly enough I just talked about that series to another entrant in a post above.....and yeah it(from the bits I played) seems like a good series.

(btw, as per Rule 5: are you opting out of the shadow man draw or not?)

It is nice....you don't have to run from the monsters/etc all the time, and there's even a hub of sorts where you can relax more sometimes.

*points to rules* Everyone is entered :D

That said, the chances of you winning it are low, so you likely have nothing to worry about. :)

Yup....and I had the same idea in my head(hugging bunnies)...hivemind?

It'd probably be fun too....well unless the bunnies were like fluffy bun bun from Toonstruck, that is. o.0 ;D

Btw as per Rule 5: Are ye opting out of the draw for shadow man?

Yes I am opting out of the draw for Shadow Man.
I'm in for both games.

Shadow Man did not initially interest me but I've been playing old games for the past few weeks and having a blast.

As for the question, yes, I like to be scared by games. It's an escape and there's nothing like being creeped out by pixels. lol. It's a stress reliever for me. Nothing beats playing a scary game after a stressful day. VTM: Bloodlines' hotel mission is one that will always be memorable to me. The game itself is not a scary game except for that mission. Yeah, you are a badass vampire but in that mission, you feel helpless. Your powers don't mean shit. You just have to escape that damn place. That feeling of helplessness and of being watched was so creepily good. I know it's a game but when I play, I love immersing myself in the world, and VTM: Bloodlines has a very immersive world.
