Thanks for the discount. I nabbed CMR and Screamer.

Krankor: Endless surprises at GOG (no way did I ever think we'd see a Racing Promo!).

DId you miss the first one? That was a good week. :)

iWi: It usually works this way, that there is a certain sell-off period during which certain publisher or distributor (Codemasters in this case) are not allowed to produce given title anymore, but they can sell the remaining stock. Once the stock is on the shelve it can stay there for years even and its really up to the retailer if they are willing to carry TOCA 3 or they want to return it.
avatar
Weclock: Also, they may retain the rights in certain countries to still use those names.
For Example, in Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom in Japan, Tatsunoko is one company, but here in America a bajillion different companies own the rights to all the different Tatsunoko characters, which means because Capcom is bringing the game here, they have to make deals with everyone here.

Yeah, REALLY impressed with them for that. And MvsC2 was tough to get as well. Can't help it, I am a total whore for Capcom. I hope they come here one day -- they would definitely fit in well in terms of personality and catalogue.

BoxOfSnoo: I think TOCA was because of licenses they use in the game - Codemasters couldn't distribute it indefinitely.
I grabbed CMR without a second thought though. I think this was the shortest announcement-to-purchase time for me yet! Probably under 1 minute :)

PhoenixWright: Under a minute for me as well. Boy, this advertising is really working on me.

I didn't see any advertising.

I guess "still new" means "we can't sell it for ten bucks", since no game here crosses that barrier unless it's bundled somehow.
I got TOCA 3 from the last promo. Does CMR2k5 plays the same way? Would nab it immediately if it had split screen, but if the game is too similar to TOCA (not just by genre but by gameplay) then I'm not that interested. I just installed TOCA recently and I'm not even that big a fan of racing games but they are excellent time killers for "few minutes" gaming. Unlike RPG's or adventure games, where once you get immersed you just need to put the time and brains into it.
I have a suggestion for the emails that notify us of these specials: When the recipient opens the email and sees the GoG splash page describing the specials, the images of the games should be links to those games' descriptions.
This isn't the first time I've gotten one of the emails, been somewhat interested in one of the games, tried to click on it for more description... and been disappointed that I was unable to do so.
You've already got individual pages for each game, with descriptions and screenshots; why not link directly to them from the email? (Or even from the splash page that the emails sends you to, for that matter!) It seems to me that forcing a potential buyer to come to the actual site and then manually search for the game in order to decide if they want it is a sizable barrier to making a sale.
These prices are right in the sweet spot for "impulse buy," but (at least in my case) it's being prevented by the extra hassle.

Oh, you have Codemasters on your catalogue? I really loved Micro Machines when I was a kid, would you bring those back?

Touring car racing is VERY different from World Rally. WR is only a small part of it on tarmac and there are no circuit races (laps). Each Rally (country) has several stages (events) and they are point A to point B races. You race against the time of yourself and others, but there are NO other vehicles to race against at the same time. (not exactly true to the real one, but for games yes)
You have a co-driver who gives you instructions about what you are to meet ahead, corners, speed traps, warnings, etc. I haven't played CMR2005 but if it is even remotely realistic as it is supposed to be and as other games are, then if you do not listen to the co-driver, you might as well just give up. There are very high speeds involved, very narrow roads with many changes and usually limited visibility either due to the weather or to the road/environment. World Rally racing is the most demanding 4 wheel racing on the planet, give or take a couple of one off events.
TOCA is just a more complicated version of nascar. :-p
oh screw it, I am going to buy CMR2005 now. I just sold myself to it.

Hmm... if my understanding of spoken english was as good as my understanding of written english, I'd nab it also. Does it have subtitles? Or are those too distracting when you drive?
It's just understanding spoken (or yelled) instructions on the fly demands a whole other amount of concentration on my part.
Just had to say how impressed I am at the communication and promos on gog. Awesome stuff and another game bought!

There are usually arrows on the screen to help. Also don't expect the co driver to tell you his life story, the instructions are simple words like "left" "five", "jump" etc.
I just checked the manual, there is a section explaining all the co-driver's instructions. After a couple of stages you should be able to understand him.
There is also an "arrow" on the screen to help you.

StealthKnight: Can't they just change the names. Why are the licenses can't be separated from the game. It sounds like they are holding the game hostage like the mafia. Especially when they are not making quality games like this and TOCA. I guess that real world names are not a good thing to have in games after all unless you release slightly new games annually.
avatar
iWi: They move on with the development and its really tough to go back to a game and let's say remove half of the cars - do not forget its not only about the names. Let's say Subaru for example looks in a certain characteristic way and you would have to change the actual car, what becomes really difficult.
avatar
iWi: Codemasters is using many different licenses within the game (cars, car parts, sponsors, etc.) and their agreements expire at some point. As they (nor we - although we would be eager to do this ;) can not separate licenses from the game, we have to discontinue Colin. Hopefully we will be able to deliver some more driving games from Codemasters soon :)
avatar
DrIstvaan: Do you happen to know why they can keep distributing TOCA 3 (and, probably, CMR05) via other platforms? I thought this case means they have to pull it off from EVERYWHERE...

So Gog does not count as a retailer that chose to keep it on the shelf but Steam does? Sounds like an overly complicated situation that shouldn't be.

El Caz, here are three youtube video clips of this game in action to get an idea.

I just checked and there are options fo the text and language of the co driver to be in other languages too, english, french, spanish, german, italian.

I'd call it promotion not advertising. Semantics I guess. But I really hate advertising and really like how GOG does things. Heh.
I grabbed ToCA 3 at the last promo, I'm thinking about getting Colin McRae now.
We need codemasters to put up some more racing titles so we can get more sales when their licenses expire :D
That works for me! Thanks, Trusteft. Enjoy a couple of +'s on your posts.
