Gersen: The most silly thing in this whole "debate" is that GoG have said countless time, nearly since their creation, long before Galaxy, that their DRM-free promise only extended to the single player part of the games and that they couldn't make any guarantee for the multi-player part if there was one.

Heck peoples also seem to forget that, long before Galaxy, there was already multiple games on GoG that required registration on the dev website or even online activation to access the multiplayer part.

throgh: Well? And that's a reason for what? Spare out criticism? Yes, customer demand some things ... but when one thing is clear enough throughout this discussion: Some users are just willing or lazy enough to accept everything and they just don't care about possible implications.
And some gamers are not happy unless they find something to bitch about.....................................

GOG is going to get blasted on Multi Player no matter what they do. If the try to offer a multi player service with GOG connect, they get accused of violating their no DRM policy;if they don't they are accused of selling a broken product because Multi player does not work.........

You can't expect a 20 or even a 10 year old game to have multi player capaublity right out of the box. Period. THings change too fast, and on line gaming services..even the biggest...go under all the time, as the demise of Gamespy shows. You can't except the impossible.

Multiplayer implies also the possibility using that just "local" and I'm not talking about splitscreen. But that's just a sidenote, even more for older titles. You can do as you want, but when talking about "bitch about". That's another simplification about the whole topic, because it's easier to accept instead drawing some harsher line, saying NO to some upcoming features or so-called "optional" things like a client. It is clear to see here in the discussion: Giving up control, but there is a "secret" to tell ... the machine in front of us all is a little bit more than only a gaming-machine to power on or off and there should be also more knowledge instead giving up control, because ... yeah, being lazy. Regarding a client this is not only an individual decision. Mass is counting and GOG will have a look on that! ;-)

Don't == No multiplayer because old master is gone
Do == Has multiplayer, GOG is the master

There is an alternative. Release the documentation for the protocols so you can choose your master or be your own because anyone willing can then implement the server-side code.

Okay, they're really taking the piss now...

https://www.gog.com/forum/general/offline_installers_with_an_option_to_install_gog_galaxy

"Hey everyone!

Starting on Friday, we’re going to include the option to install the GOG Galaxy client from the offline installers downloaded via GOG.com in over 100 games.

As many new users discover and download games from our website, we don’t want them to end up with installations that don’t auto-update or backup saves to the cloud. In fact, we want to offer everyone the most convenient experience from the get-go.

Don’t fret, nothing’s changed with our approach to GOG Galaxy being optional, which is why you can easily uncheck the GOG Galaxy installation within the game installer settings. "

So we now have to uncheck galaxy install, instead of them not setting it to install on every installer?

Lame excuse because... "As for the option being opted in as default - after careful consideration, we've decided to go with this because we believe that it's easier for an experienced user to uncheck the box than it would be for a new user to figure out how to turn the feature on."

Crock of shit!

So I take it this also means it is also increasing our download sizes too?

buh bye gog.

The download size will not increase because it will be a separate download(at least I hope it will be), but about the rest you're right.

Later edit:

And I was wrong :(.

Just came here to confirm it is forced into all installs after they replied to my comment.

/sighs.

I have to agree it should be disabled by default,...

While download on check would be slightly better, in the grand scheme of things you are talking about 100 MB, probably way less than that based on how well they can compress it. So that is a far less of a big deal.

You say that like devs don't already have a choice... LAN? Direct IP? They can pretty much provide future proof ways to keep online working regardless of Galaxy or Steam. They choose not to in many cases.

You also open yourself up to being arguably less secure by doing that... and a MP plagued by cheaters and idiots. Which those type of online communities tend to die quick. This idea sounds good on paper, but doesn't really pan out as well as you think.

Wow, they seem to be out of their mind. This is really scummy behavior and looks like to be paving the way for a future in which the client is needed which already constitutes DRM as it controls the use and distribution of the games. A browser is something everyone has regardless (and you can choose between different ones), an extra client isn't...

Good News!!!

GoG Galaxy is now more optional than ever! You now have the option of installing it with every game you install! See, optional!

To quote fables22:

We're aware that there might be a size issue with the new installers, and we're working on it to make sure the installers are much smaller so that this is no longer a problem
In short: Downloading Galaxy is not optional anymore, people with a thousand games on their backups will soon have Galaxy a thousand times downloaded and stored if they want to keep their versions more or less current.
