Correct me if I'm being outrageously stupid.
I have been able to play all of my games from Steam in offline mode. What seems to be the problem for all of you folks?

dreadcog: I'll wait for GOG to get them. I'd rather own them.
Not that I don't own them already. hehe SCUMM works wonders for the oldies.
That reminds me I want to play Full Throttle again.

You never actually own anything when you buy a game anyway, you just license it. Besides, what makes you think you are just "renting" a game when you buy it from Steam?

You are not outrageously stupid, I too use offline mode all the time with no issues at all. The only games that should have issues with offline mode are the multiplayer games like Team Fortress 2, but that should go without saying.

And since apparently some of the datafiles are embedded in the executable, ScummVM cannot be used with the Steam versions. http://forums.scummvm.org/viewtopic.php?t=7554&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=30

Krankor: LOL! I lied and took a look.
this had me rolling about laughing...
STEAM FORUMS : Lucasarts.
Indiana Jones and the last crusade is not available in Germany.

I can't help but laugh at that.
They have some pretty serious nazi complexes going on still.

If the CD/DVD is in my possession I own it end of story. If you don't believe you own anything then that's your belief.
Steam isn't going to be around forever. I use to think most things will be but times change and companies change hands. Same goes with game license agreements. Nothing lasts forever man, only kids believe that crap.

If Steam goes under they would likely release a patch that disables it needing to use the servers/be online or come up with a way to provide you with a cd key (for the games that you need one online, etc) so that you can still "own" it.
As far as having the dvd meaning you own it, that used to be the case but now you have the stupid "limited activation" and crap so no, that isn't the case anymore I'm afraid.
With Steam's success I just don't see it going anywhere anytime so, they'll be around for many many years to come.

Yea, I agree with what you say. Hopefully things will get less restrictive. This whole everyone is a criminal except me junk has to stop.

How is your ownership of the CD/DVD really any different than the fact that I own the hard drive the game is on? Your CD/DVD is just a storage device for the game files, just like my hard drive, which has the same exact files stored on it. Sure, you own a disk, just like I own a hard drive, but what is on that disk and my hard drive belongs to the developer/publisher, at least according to every EULA ever written. Unless or until someone actually challenges that in court and overturns it, that is the way it is, whether or not you believe it.

Sure, if you like being treated like a criminal. I guess a similar Napster event will have to take place where total control is lost, I don't mean BitTorrent. The more people accept this crap the worse it's going to get.

How am I being treated like a criminal, simply because I am using a digital download service for some of my PC gaming needs rather than buying physical media? You are railing against this like you railed against socialism in another thread and I'm beginning to think you understand the whole debate over DRM about as much as you understood that... in other words, very little understanding at all.

If Steam disappears, I will simply download the games I bought from another source. They got their money - I will get my game. Simple as that.
I need everyone to point at me and laugh.
Just bought 'The Dig' off STEAM and guess what?
Launch game...
The game is currently unavailable, please try another time.
So after my short trip away, I'm back in GOG land.

It's okay man, believe what you want because this is the same old story told over again. I'm not here to change your mind about anything. Debating is pointless. One day you'll see what we are talking about.

Someone from Valve posted that they're working on fixing that, so hopefully you'll be able to enjoy it soon :)
