dr.schliemann: Ah, so many shows come to mind, but I am astonished because nobody has mentioned "Lost" yet.
avatar
Tarm: That's because they don't want anyone to think that they didn't understand the show.
Lost is actually what pops into my head right away. I saw the first couple episodes when it first aired, thought it was stupid, and never bothered with it again. I don't think I'd say I didn't understand it. I just didn't like it.

Elmofongo: Don't forget swear words like fuck and bitch and cunt. Swear words in a medieval fantasy setting, unacceptable for me.
There's actually a good reason for that. If they used the period-accurate swearing, it would sound so anachronistic to our ears (and some would sound outright ridiculous) that it would be even worse than using the modern terms. Sometimes complete accuracy detracts from the production and swearing is one instance where this generally is the case when the setting is medieval or based on medieval times.

Yeesh, I guess it takes all kinds but I've pretty much all of my favorite television shows mentioned here.

For me, its American Horror Story. Its okay, I just don't think its as good as many people seem to think, despite some stellar acting especially from Jessica Lange.
Granted it does seem to get it's share of hate online, after watching about 5 minutes of one episode of The Big Bang Theory I saw no possible explanation for how that has managed to be on the air for years now.

I just don't want swear words at all in a medieval setting, fatansy or historical, with very few exceptions like Damn, Hell, Bastard, and mabye shit (emphasis on Mabye) it just sounds wrong hearing Knights, Princess, Kings, and Queens saying swear words like fuck. Probably because I expect them to be more classy than that.

They also generally use present-day British accents for medieval fantasy settings. No one used to sound like that hundreds of years ago. But if they used period-accurate and grammar and accents (as far as you can reconstruct them) few people would be able to understand the actors.

Hey if the Passion of the Christ, which earned the highest box office for an R Rated film, use the ancient langauge of the biblical time and got away with it. I am sure any other show like Game of Thrones could pull it off.
- Game of Thrones
- Doctor Who

I feel they are overrated, but I have never watched them. Well 1 episod of Doctor Who and there were multiple doctors. They were called doctor who but they are not really a doctor and when why the who? I have no idea. They travel in time and apparantly people in the past know everyone from the future. Then you have these statues that are supposed to be really scary and dangerous, while they are nothing but statues. Apparantly they move if you look away. So just pick them up and throw them in a pulverizer. Problem solved.

That's only because tons of religious people went to see it. The use of ancient languages in that movie was actually a pretty clever trick to create the illusion of historical accuracy. Anyway, I don't think audiences would tolerate that kind of thing in a general fantasy setting. And what language should they even use in Game of Thrones? The entire setting is fictional, so to have the actors speak in a made-up language during the entire show would be a huge pain with no clear benefit.

keeveek: >shows
>the first post is about anime

thread ruined from the start.

btw. for me it's Dexter. It starts mediocre and then it becomes utter shit and stays that way till the end.
Most anime were on TV. :P Evangelion was even in the west.

For me, I'll say House and The Walking Dead. Both are good for the most part but don't deserve all the praise imo.

Which is funny because Kings, knights and all that weren't all that classy (from the records we have). You know jester's used to be popular in royal courts? Well historical accounts of jesters show that fart jokes were very popular... how times have changed.

Not off the top of my head. If you give me some time to think about it I could probably find some. I'd also add them to the list though.

In other words, by your standard nothing is good enough to deserve the praise it gets? ;)

Yeah it looks more like he just listed a bunch of shows that are remotely popular. I'd put more stock in it if he actually stated why he thinks each of those shows is overrated.

For me there's just one at the moment: Revenge.

Seriously, WILL ALL THE WOMEN IN MY LIFE STOP TALKING ABOUT THIS SHOW LIKE IT'S THE BEST THING EVER PUT TO THE AIRWAVES?!?!?!?!? I can't stand the air headed main actresses droning voice and I don't care about her characters super rich problems.

Yes! They're just TV shows but as soon as they get popular people start making all these hyperbolic statements that no show can live up to.
